Are New England Firearms any good?

I was looking thru my Shooter's Bible for an economical hunting rifle and ran across NEF. They have a Break-action rifle w/ synthetic stock listed for $219-$224.

I know w/ firearms, you usually get what you pay for (which is why I buy SIGs in handguns). :) So I thought I'd throw this out to any who are familiar w/ New England Firearms: Are they a reliable company, are they accurate, and well-made?

Couple of years back I had a NEF .45/70.Have to say I was suprised by how well it shot, despite my friends opinion of it being a "cheap" gun.I Regret getting rid of it.

Howdy Darth,

I got your email. I just picked up mine yesterday and haven't had a chance to shoot it yet. I can tell you though, the gun is very well made, all the parts fit well, the finish on the stock is really nice (mine has the laminated wood stock) and the trigger is real smooth but a bit heavy. I don't know if the previous owner had the trigger worked on or not. It doesn't feel like it because it is a bit heavy. So far, I can recommend one as the price is very good.

The Mesquite gun show is coming up on Sept. 9. You might want to go by and look for a used one. There will probably be some new ones there also.

Darthmaum, the NEF Handis are mechnically sound rifles. Nothing fancy. If you're into nice shiny bluing and pretty wood, the Handi is not the rifle for you.

They shoot very well and offer the opportunity for you to have shotgun or other caliber rifle barrels fit to the same frame. This makes them quite versitile and the price of these barrels is very reasonable.

A few words of advice, if you should decide to buy a Handi-Rifle:

1. The trigger needs to be worked over by a good gunsmith.

2. If you think you are ever going to want one of the Handis in .243 Win, .270 Win, .280 Rem, .308 Win, or .30-06, get a complete Handi in that caliber FIRST. NEF will gladly fit any of their less powerful rifle or shotgun barrels to this frame. They won't, however, chamber any of the above calibers in a rifle made for the less powerful cartridges or shotgun.

A word of caution! You could probably get by with one rifle caliber and a 12 ga. barrel. But once you get started, you'll think of all sorts of reasons why you NEED another barrel in some other caliber or gauge! ;-)

Regards! DaMan
