Are Hypothetical Discussions OK?

Are hypothetical scenarios an ok topic for this forum or do they cause problems. There are several issues in the news that I would like to ask 'what should we do if in this situation' but I really don't want to be the catalyst for to much passion.

Can the original poster set the rules for his/her post? If so, does this population follow them? I am still relatively new to this group and don't want to strain my welcome.

Hey John,

I'm not a moderator so I can only speak as to what I see..but most "what if" scenarios don't seem to fly here. We do have one that is currently running but that is because the posters are not going off of the deep end.

Just be sure to read the forum rules. As the same situation as Danzig is, my experience is to keep it reasonable and on topic. The end of the world...zombies, etc. is not tolerated at all.
Posters don't set the rules. Rich Lucibella does. However, the original poster (thread starter) should be given the respect of staying on topic for the most part by the other posters. That's my personal opinion. I will be the first to admit guilt to that. But if your intentions are genuine, respect is normally reciprocated.
I think you'll see some quirks on this site, but overall more professional and enjoyable than most.

Allow me to add, that most recognized "What Would You Do" scenarios, belong in the Tactics and Training forum.

As long as the hypothetical is realistic and the ensuing discussion sticks to the point, they can be instructive... And even fun! Once we leave the path of reality though, they tend to degenerate and get closed quickly.

Thanks for the input. I will re-read the forum rules. I didn't think to put the subject under 'Training & Tactics'. I haven't been through all of the forums yet, so I am not familiar with all of them.

I didn't mean to sound as if I wanted to change any of the forum rules, just to 'set the stage' for the thread. Mostly to keep things on topic and hopefully civil. Still a little leery of the subject.

I think I will do just a little bit more research before posting anything. I think a PM to the T&T moderator is probably in order before I post. Thanks again for the input.

I have not been a member here for very long so I am not sure what the reference to 'zombies' is. I expect there is probably a pretty interesting story behind that one. I understand the "leaving the path of reality" comment. I've seen that happen on an astronomy forum. Led to a very respected forum being relegated to an insignificant bystander.

That is why I asked before I posted. I haven't yet, but before I do anything I will communicate with the specific forum moderator.

Copied from other posts:

"The end of the world...zombies, etc. is not tolerated at all" "leave the path of reality though" "no zombies "
