Are Gold Dot JHP +P ?

This is a very basic question. In alot of posts/threads on TFL lately, I have seen Speer Gold Dots referred to as "+P" ammo.
I carry these rounds in all of my carry guns. I like the availibility, accuracy and energy. But no where can I find the "+P" reference....I checked Speers Gold Dot w/site, every box I have in the house (20+) and no "+P" anywhere.

Do you make this reference on the basis that the g/d has as much
vel/energy as similar ammo with a "+P" rating? Just curious...

Thanks for any reply and shoot well

+P means that the cartridge generates up to ten percent over SAAMI spec PEAK pressure. Doesn't mean much in relation to the performance of the projectile.

Unless you know the velocity difference (if any) in YOUR gun, not much reason to dump your ammo and get the +P.

You should be able to find both +P and +P+ 9mm Gold Dot ammo. If I remember correctly, the 115 gr ammo is rated at +P+, and the 124 gr ammo is rated at +P. The 147 gr subsonic ammo is rated at normal SAAMI pressure levels.

I will research the differences between the ballistics in my barrel length/type and see if it warrants the change. I buy all of my G/Dot at the same place and he will probably just "trade up" to the +P or +P+ with out any problem. I appreciate the words of
wisdom....I learn alot from you and tfl. Shoot well

230gr. +P

http://www.proload.com/ rates their 230gr. Gold Dot load as +P at 920fps out of their 5" test barrel vs. 850fps for standard.

I know +p is a measure of pressure but it does relate to velocity. It is questionable whether the added 70fps avg. is a significant factor in effectiveness.

Total pressure definately affects velocity. Peak pressure has little direct bearing on velocity.

Classic example from Winchester Reloading data. Same test rig, different loads and pressures. .357magnum, 125gr bullets.
Powder 231.........pressure 42,500.......velocity 1,460
Powder 296.........pressure 32,500.......velocity 1,800

In this case, grossly higher peak pressure yielded much lower velocity.

I use the ProLoad 9mm 115gr +p @ 1300fps in my P228. The most accurate load yet. I have it in all my defensive pistols. Their website lists specs. I.E. 9mm standard 115 at 1160,115+p at 1300, etc.

Sam,
I think I get it. Different powders burn/combust differentely?
Faster burning powders build pressure better in short barrel guns? Its not the peak but how it builds to that peak that
matters? Kinda the sum of its parts" effect?

I remember this discussion from when my dad would reload, but dont remember=20 years ago. I am curious to know anyway. Shoot well

Eric,

Just to let you know, Gary Olin from "The Sportman's Guide" is still selling 124gr +P Speer Gold Dots (shiny pretty nickel cased :p ) 9mm ammunition for a heck of a good price.

Also, Georgia Arms loads both +P and +P+ Gold Dot ammunition for many different calibers in their "Sheer-Power-Plus" line at affordable prices.

Let me know if you're interested, and I'll hunt down the web addy for both.

.357SIG,

Yes and no.
Their bulk ammunition are reloads using once fired brass.
Their Sheer-Power-Plus line was using all new StarLine brass last I checked, and each appropriately marked +P or +P+.

Does Gary Olin from "The Sportman's Guide" conduct businss over the Internet or ship ammo out of state? If so, how would one get in touch with him? Thanks in advance!
