Are crossbows regulated

Oleg Volk

Staff Alumnus
I have tried a variety of bows and decided to get a crossbow instead. Could someone tell me how to go about finding a bow with some sort of a drawing aid (windlass, crannequin, etc.)? What features, construction to look for, how to choose bolts, so on. Thanks.

Regulations depend on your state. Wyoming's hunting law allow them unles you have a cocking aid - windlass, crannequin, etc. The cocking devices are illegal unless you have a handicap which make them essential.

I haven't used a crossbow in many years so I wouldn't be all that helpful in relating what my old Barnett set up could do. It doesn't hold a candle to the new compound crossbows out there now.

In Calif., they were illegal once for hunting but now are legalized. Have to check with State Fin & Feathers to confirm.

Other than that, they are not regulated in this state. I mail ordered mine but unfortunately, have no place to shoot. Archery ranges dislike them because then shorten the life expectancy of the target mats (or hay bales).

BTW, I've no trouble drawing mine (older Barnett) by hand and won't trouble myself with the extra gear (more weight & gadgets to carry in the field). The compound style crossbows should be even easier.

Right now, if I can find a local archery shop, I'd like to get a simple recurve. I've a Browning Compound, but want to go primative.

The PBS National Anti-Crossbow Committee was established in 1986 in response to increasing threats to the integrity of the archery-only hunting seasons by
those manufacturers and other hunters wanting to use crossbows during the archery-only hunting season. Since then, this Committee has led a national effort
to educate bowhunters, legislators, state fish and game agencies, and other hunters to the threats presented by those who want to use crossbows in archery-only
hunting seasons.

The other side of the coin is that more people are in the field paying for archery licences...

NSW & crossbows, Things to come in USA? http://www.ausbow.mtx.net/news.html
CHANGE TO NSW PROHIBITED WEAPONS (CROSSBOWS) PERMIT PROCEDURE The NSW government changed the rules relating to the issue of Shooters'
Permits for crossbow shooting on 8 February 1999. Crossbow shooters should apply in writing to the NSW Firearms Registry stating:

name in full
address (residential and postal)
date of birth
type of crossbows(s)
reason for seeking permit
proposed storage arrangements and storage address

Crossbow hunting is NOT A VALID REASON for seeking a permit - recreational target shooting is. Crossbow shooters are encouraged to join an archery club. NSW
residents are advised that there is a maximum fine of $11,000 or 14 years for owning/shooting a crossbow in NSW without a valid permit.

I knew Crossbows were heavily regulated in the People's Republic (of Australia). Americans don't believe me when I tell them that slingshots are all but verboten.

14 years for an unlicenced crossbow?

I just read in a North Queensland newspaper of a guy who broke into a house, attempted rape of an adult, then kidnapped and sodomized a child.

HE got 12.

Nice to see the Australian Justice system is going as strong as ever.

4V50 Gary,

I used to have a Browning Compound (X-Cellerator) and decided to go more primitive. I now have a Martin Recurve and I love it. I mail ordered it from Bowhunter's Warehouse. I am also from California and it can be difficult to find or get any service. Let me know if you have any questions, I'd be glad to help.

A drawing aid may only be illegal for hunting in some states

In the US all crossbow accessories are legal to possess for now.
(except for the nuke tiped quarrels)

the foot strip is not a safety problem because you do not load a bolt until the crossbow is cocked

at close ranges a crossbow does not arc the shot and it is very quiet.

The Crankaroo dramatically reduces the effort required to draw any of Excalibur's models, as well as guaranteeing consistent string alignment. Unlike cumbersome permanently
mounted cranks, it detaches in seconds when the bow is cocked, and is carried separately in a pack or pocket.

Quickdraw Cocking Aid

For some hunters, cocking a 175 pound crossbow can be a challenge... but not anymore...
thanks to the new Horton Quickdraw cocking aid.
Lightweight, durable, compact and hunter rugged, the Quickdraw allows you to cock your crossbow in only 30 seconds with only five pounds of effort.

The Crank Cocking Device is used for easy cocking of the Quad-300, RC-300 and 300-Mag, and the Rhino
Crank Device is designed for use on the Rhino, Rhino Quad, Rhino Recurve and Wildcat III. These cocking
devices are permanently attached to the crossbow and require only 16-lbs of tension to operate. They
have one crank handle and feature an anti-reverse gear for safety.

here are the state laws for crossbow hunting: http://www.barnettcrossbows.com/crossreg.htm

the Barrnet commando II is very nifty & has a built in cocking device: http://www.barnettcrossbows.com/comm_IIcomp.htm

The Delta Storm has the gee wiz factor of folding limbs http://www.barnettcrossbows.com/delta.htm
can you say stealthy?

A crossbow can be very effective. During World War Two the Australians developed a silenced crossbow whick reportedly was very effective in silently killing Jaoanese sentris and scoyes. Its effective range was supposed to be 100 yards.

I heard that some states allow them for handicapped hunters. Not my area but I have a friend who keeps one by the bed for midnight visitors.

I used to shoot a crossbow then I did my homework. A quality compound bow is easier to carry, faster to deploy, flatter shooting, and much more accurate. I now have no use for a cross bow whatsoever.

In some states bows for hunting are regulated by let off thereby taking a cross bow clear out of the picture. In Wyoming they are still legal to hunt with, but why bother?

Oleg,

In the Middle Ages, when crossbows first were used in warfare, the Pope banned their use against Christians.

To my knowledge, I don't think subsequent Popes have rescinded that order.

Just wanted to keep you out of trouble, so think twice if the BG is wearing a crucifix or fish amulet.
