re:
The original "Hardball" design with its tapered feed lips and late, gradual release is the only one that presents the cartridge to the chamber the way that was designed and intended. As in "Controlled" Feed.
Because the tapered lips allow the rear of the cartridge to rise as it moves forward, by the time it finally releases, the extractor has picked up the rim...so full control can't be lost the way it can be with the early, abrupt release of the parallel-lipped "Wadcutter" type magazines...especially on the last round.
And there are those who claim that GI magazines don't work with hollowpoint ammunition, but I haven't found that to be true. The only ones that have caused a problem...and not in all pistols...has been the truncated cone design like the old Hydra Shok, Hornady XTP and the Hornady 230 FMJ truncated cone that seems to have been discontinued.
And with those mentioned, Colt's 7-round "Hybrid" design that combines the tapered lips with the timed release point handles them nicely.
