Are Bullet Designs Suited To Specific Calibers ?

Guys,

I've been bouncing this one around in my head for a while. I would summarise my knowledge of people's PD cartridge preferences in handgun calibers as follows :

.32 ACP - Win Silvertip (forget the weight)
.38 Spl - standard press. - Federal Nyclad
+p - Winchester 158gr LSWCHP
9mm Para- stnd. - Federal Classic 9BP 115gr
+p - 124gr Gold Dot
.40S&W - 155gr Remington GSHP (bit vague)
.357 Sig - 125gr Gold Dot
.45ACP - Federal 230 gr Hydrashock

Whilst you can argue endlessly about whether the above list is correct or not, what is obvious is that the same basic bullet design is not popular in each caliber. Hence the basic question, assuming that the same bullet weight achieves near identical velocity regardless of manufacturer, are certain bullet designs inherently better suited to certain calibers ? Any thoughts.

Regards,

Mike H
