Are all nickel plated shotguns equal?

I like the looks of those nickel plated / all weather shotguns.

Does the plating completly prevent any rust from growing on them?

Are all the nickel plated shotguns equal?

Is one finish from a company better than anothers?
 
So the finish on the benelli nova h20 or the mossberg mariner or the Remington 870 nickel plated pretty much all last the same?
 
User reports I've heard indicate that the Remington Marine Magnum finish is more durable than the Mossberg Marine.

This seems to be mostly a matter of better quality control of the plating.

The only shotgun I've ever used on a boat was a .410 Snake Charmer, and it was really stainless steel, not just nickel plated. Even it rusted to some degree in the salt air. We used it to shoot the occasional shark we brought in to eat, and it was stashed in one of the lockers. When we cleaned up the boat after a fishing trip where we'd used the little gun, we hosed the Snake Charmer down with fresh water and blew it out with compressed air, then sprayed it with spray lubricant. It still rusted. Ocean water is some mean stuff.

The old timers used to keep their boat guns in fleece lined cases where the fleece had been sprayed liberally with rust resisting chemicals. That might not be a bad idea even with a 'marine' shotgun.

Winchester used to make stainless steel versions of the 1200 and 1300.

Strangely, Winchester found that the stainless guns rusted easily, especially inside the bore, so they went to the nickel plated option and found the finish was more durable than the stainless.
