Are aftermarket barrels reliable in glocks?

I'm looking at making my next purchase either a G21 or G30, but want the extended bbl. to maximize the .45's effectiveness.I'm thinking of getting either a 5 or 5.5in. bbl. for the 21, or a 5in. for the 30.
A reply I got to this post over on glocktalk stated that Bar-Sto does not recommend a 5in. bbl. for the G30 as it affects accuracy, but they do sell them for the 30, go figure.
My main concern w/ an aft. mkt. bbl. is reliability.I was leaning towards the 30 w/ the 5in. bbl. as it fits my hand a little better & would still be more concealable, but don't want any accuracy or function problems.Any help or opinions on either pistol w/ the extended bbl. is appreciated. Thanks in advance...long shot!

Had Jarvis hard-fit a barrel in my (now-sold) M20.

It was NOT as reliable a feeder as the stock barrel.
It WAS more accurate.

I'm having a bit of trouble with the practability of what you're suggesting. If you're looking for a gun for carry, why do you want to make it as big as an artillary piece? I can't imagine a longer barrel doing that much for the Glock 21, but then I've never considered one for mine. I can't imagine that going from 4.5" to 5" in the G21 is going to make a significant difference. Why not just do some research on +P ammo if you really think you need more "effectiveness"?

johnwill,
The extended 5in. bbl. was mainly an option for the G30, as the data I've seen on short bbl. 45's is often times less than impressive, even w/light or +p ammo.
I most likely would go w/ the 5.5in. for the 21,as I agree the 1/2in. would not make much of a diff. This gun would be used for range work & home defense.
A 5in. bbl. would hardly affect my ability to conceal the 30,I'm more concerned w/ the grip area and overall bulk & heft of a pistol. In the past, I've comfortably carried a G17 & G22 do to their light weight, the bbl. length did not prove troublesome. Also, there are more than a few people that make a fullsize 1911 disappear on a daily basis.
As for a steady diet of +p ammo, I might as well step up to a G20 or 29 as these two loads can produce similar recoil & in some of the hottest 45 +p's, similar energy numbers.
My point is jw: It always seems the 45's "effectiveness" somehow reverts back to that damn 5in. bbl.
It's all about the fun, stay safe...long shot!

I've had KKM Precision, BarSto and Briley barrels in various Glocks. All were fitted and 100% reliable. They were also more accurate than the factory barrels.

I have a "drop in" BarSto barrel in my G21. It has been stone cold reliable with ball, hollow points, round nose lead, SWC lead and truncated cone lead bullet reloads.

Federal HydraShok 230g averaged 894 fps from the 4.6" BarSto. The same factory load averaged 867 fps the last time I chronographed it in my 5" Government mode.

There's probably more lot to lot veriation in factory ammo than you will see going from a 4.6" barrel to a 5.5" barrel.

I have used Jarvis,Barsto and KKM barrels in Glocks. All have been 100% reliable and have afforded better accuracy than stock barrels.

Tossing around the idea of putting a .357 Sig barrel in my 22. I bought the gun new back in 94, an older model. Will I have any problems with this?

Data schmata! Even from snubby barrels the better 230 45 loads (HS, GS, GD) are doing fine; as good as the +P 45s, 180 40s and +P 9s anyway, just a step behind the 155/165 40s and 357 S&M IMO, which is worth what it cost you. :)

Some work, some don't. Some will drop in, some will need fitting. Some won't work as well as stock even after fitting, but usually shoot tighter.

357S in an older G22? Glock says don't do it, but I know lottsa people who have w no trouble. So it will only last 200K rounds instead of 300K. :)
