AR15 Flat Top Optics

I'm finally completing my AR15 project in a couple of weeks! This one will be my third one so hopefully no one will come by and like my rifle better than I do and take it off my hands for me. I'm almost thinking of engraving the darn thing so I just about can't get rid of it!:D

This one will be the first flatop model that I've owned. All the others have been coventional A2's. I am thinking of possibly mounting a standard scope on it for a bit of deer hunting but I'm concerned with the front sight post interefing with the sight picture in my scope. In the latest Guns and Weapons for LE I saw that they had a conventional scope mounted on a flatop. It seemed that almost half the scope was blocked my the front sight post. If I decide to mount a scope on my AR in this manner, will I see a blur in the sight picture from the front sight post?

I've mounted a 50mm scope on my carry handle models before and it seemed quite off balanced. This is one of my reasons for a move to a flaptop, plus I didn't like the scope being so far above the boreline.

I may just go ahead and mount an Aimpoint Comp on and just forego the whole conventional scope route. I've shot a setup like this where the red dot rested right on top of the front sight. It made for an interesting sight picture, but I do like the magnification of a conventional scope for longer ranges.

Red, with a scope your front sight should fade out and not bother you. I am a big fan of the Comp ML2 Aimpoint, I have one on my Bushmaster and love it. The photo below will show you what I see through the Aimpoint, you can see the front sight towards the bottom. I am using a # 38 extended Swan sleeve and a 22M68 mount without a spacer. With a normal cheekweld I see what is in the photo, if I bear down a little tighter the irons and dot line up. Happy Holidays, Mike...

You won't "see" the front sight except possibly with very low scope magnification. I have an old 4-12x Redfield mounted low on a flattop and I've never noticed the front sight in the field of view, even when I purposely looked for it.

I've a 1.5X6 on my flattop & just did a quick check. At 1.5X, the front sight post is visible at about the bottom third of the picture below the horizontal crosshair (takes up ~1/6 of the total).

Post is gone at about 4.3X magnification.

In any event, you'll be focusing on the crosshairs & target anyway & the post is a non-issue.

Thanks for the replies guys!

I am DEFINITELY getting an Aimpoint mounted later! The only thing I hate is the price of the mounts..ack...but then you get what you pay for.

Anyone know of any good places online to order one? I checked Sable CO. http://www.sableco.net/ and they have the Aimpoint Comp ML2 with the CET Diode for $285.

Anyone seen a better price? I've checked over at AR15.com and it seems these guys have a pretty good rep for service.

I have purchased 2 Aimpoints and all my ARMS mounts from Sableco and have been very pleased with their service. They ship immediately and will take the time to answer your questions. I dont think you will find it any cheaper or beat Donnies service. Good luck, Mike...

The Armalite flattop scope mount is a nice one-piece mount. Many clones exist. After mounting a 3x9 on a flattop, I noted that the front sight was quite noticeable at 3x. The reflection of the angled surface of the sight support was more noticeable than the actual sight. Anyway, I found an Armalite clone mount with a built-in spacer. It's about 10-15 mm of extra height, and it does away with the front sight blur at low power. Granted, the extra height is not for everyone, but it works for me.

My Christmas present to me was an ASA 9mm Flattop.

I installed the C-More Tactical on it. The Tactical has the A2 rear sight mounted as an integral part of the C-More. It really makes for a nice clean package.
The dealer I ordered the ASA through had a Bushy flattop set up with the C-More Tactical and an Armalite flattop set up with the Aimpoint ML2.
Both are great you definately won't be disappointed with either.
The Armalite with the Aimpoint had a folding rear sight. It worked well but I just didn't like it as well as the Tactical.
The one feature of the C'more that I really liked over the Aimpoint was how compact and light it was. Installed on the flattop it only sticks up about 1-1/2 inches, the Aimpoint seemed much bulkier.
All that said, I'll probably put an Aimpoint ML2 with carry handle mount on my Bushmaster. In this situation the extra bulk of the Aimpoint out over the handguard is not as noticeable.
Take Care
