AR10- lower recoil than M14 or FAL?

I don't have an AR10, and I've never fired one so I don't know. But I was listening to this guy tell me how the AR10 (because of it's superior technology or something) has less recoil than the FAL or M14/M1A. I didn't buy it, (it's kind of hard to believe somebody who says they can consistently shoot 3" MOA at 500 meters) but then I thought about it- hey, anything's possible- and I knew you guys would know. Yeah, I already know this guy is FOS, but what about the AR10!?

Well, I have fired all three, and I found the AR10 to have less felt recoil than the M1A, but about the same as the FAL. The AR10 DOES come with a very effective muzzle brake, which somewhat reduces felt recoil.

The AR-10 is also in a "straight-line" layout, which directs the recoil back into your shoulder, reducing muzzle climb. Both the FN and M14 have the bore axis raised above the point where your shoulder contacts the stock.

A.Rex,

Did the guy say 3 INCHES at 500 yards or 3 MOA at 500 yards. Big difference. 3 MOA would be about 15 inches at 500. I won't say that 3 inches at 500 yards is impossible, but it would take an exceptional AR-10 to shoot that good and probably only 1 in a 1000 or less riflemen could shoot that good. Like you said, he's FOS.

Those recoil buffers really work then huh? Always wanted to try one out (on somebody elses rifle first)- but you give it a thumbs up, eh.

3" I think. I might be FOS myself, haha.

on buffers

i put buffer in my fal, and it did reduce the recoil a bit, but they are designed to increase the life of your gun by BUFFERING THE BOLT FROM BOTTOMING OUT METAL TO METAL DURING RECOIL. and it still does not come close to bringing my FALs recoil down to the level of my AR15... my bushmaster XM-15E2S with M4A3 upper does have a AK style muzzle break wich is very effective.

My FAL has much less felt kick than my M14 did. I used to come back from the range black and blue, now it's just blue:D

Reduced recoil is a side benefit, the increased longevity of your weapon is primary..

Buy the buffer, it's cheap compared to what it does for you..

In shooting my AR-10 I have noticed little difference in felt recoil then with my AR-15. The muzzle break is very effective. IMO the AR-10 is an excellent weapon.

A.Rex...
Beware those that claim 3 inch groups at 500-1000 yards.
A 1" group at 100 is the same as 1 MOA group. Now a 1 MOA at 200 equals a 2' inch group. You see, for ever 100 yards the 1MOA opens up.
Hence.....1 MOA at 1000 yards is equal to 10 Inches. 2 MOA at 100 yards is a 2 inch group and so on.
Now take the claimed 3 Inch ...I doubt and convert that to 3 MOA at 500 yards equals 500 yards x 1MOA X 3 MOA means 5x1=5x3=15 inches For piont of impact.

Now I have a head ache

I have an AR10, M1A, and FAL. It's been a while since I've shot them side-by-side. I'd guess that yes, that AR10 probably has somewhat less recoil than the M1A and FAL. But I've never thought that either the M1A or FAL were particularly heavy recoiling rifles to begin with. All three are heavy semi-autos.

The AR10 muzzle break does work, but it is $%%@! freaking loud. I'd prefer the gun without the muzzle break.
