AR10 (AR in 7.62x51) Advice

Hello all. I am a fan of the AR and have numerous 5.56 versions. I really want to buy an AR10 soon. Does anyone have one? What brand do you advocate? Right now I'm thinking either an Armalite (the original and only real AR10) or a Rock River Arms LAR-8. I really don't want to break the bank on this purchase and would prefer to stay under $2k.

How is the recoil with the .308 in this platform? I am not recoil sensitive, but curious.

got one!

I have an Armalite AR10 for about 14 years now, must say I love that gun! I shoot the 5.56 more now due to $, but when it come hunting the AR10 is on my back.. Either one you wont go wrong, and will fit in your $ amount. Recoil is more than the 5.56, but not bad at all.

which

Armalite. Only malfunction I had with all 4 of them was a magazine that had too much phosphate in the mag body. Ran the follower up and down a few times with a stick, no more fail to feed.
Most accurate gas gun I have ever seen.

Another very pleased ArmaLite AR10 owner, best rifle I have ever owned.

I have a RRA LAR-8. I can squeeze 0.60 MOA out of the rifle on a good day with low wind and match ammo. Comes standard with a 2-stage National Match trigger, and is generally a very accurate gun.

Pros: Accurate, good trigger, low cost ($1,200).

Cons: Lack of parts compatability (magazines, stocks), overgassed (stout recoil--noticeably more than my FAL), trigger pin-walk.

For $2k, I'd save up another $500 and grab a LMT MWS.

I have heard good things accuracy wise from both Armalite and DPMS offerings. If going cheap, I'd go with the DPMS as it's both accurate and has a lot of parts/magazine compatability.

After some tinkering (KNS pins, Magpul PRS mod, scope) my LAR-8 is a beauty :)

I picked up a Remington R-25 in .308 a couple years ago. I've only shot it enough to get it sighted in, but it is a good accurate gun. Now having said that I will admit that it came with a horrible trigger so I replaced it with a Timney and I love it. Also uses the same Mags as the DPMS so repalcement mags are reasonable if you need them.

I've owned my DPMS LR308B for 4-5 years and have a good friend with an identical setup as well as another with the 24" barrel. Based upon my data point of 3, here's some things to consider with the DPMS LR308 family:

- Trigger is not so nice. Gritty, heavy, not conducive to precision shooting if you are into that.
- HEAVY... Not only is the receiver bigger D2 the larger magwell, but if you consider heavy or bull barrells (or both) especially when considering 20" tubes or longer, the weight really climbs quick. The 24" barrelled model hit 13 pounds on the bathroom scale.

I've got no background with Armalite, but I've had the opportunity to pick up several RRA guns. Realize RRA use FAL magazines. If you plan to hunt and your state required no greater than 5 shot mags, that might be a problem.

The LMT MWS was recently selected by the UK as their newest sniper rifle, dubbed the L129A1. I've never touched one, but that vote of approval would be enough to consider it in my book.
