Im looking to build an AR style rifle for deer hunting mostly and i could use some advice.....can i get the power i need out of the cheaper ar15 or will i need an ar10?? im currently using a 7.62x39 cartridge very effectively as i havent had to trail a deer over 50 yards....what do u guys think?

I would go with an AR-15 in 6.8spc. Get a spec ll chamber with a 1 in 11 or slightly slower twist barrel and call it good.

Deer rifle...

JSF--If you've had great success with the 7.62x39 then mebbe youshould stick with that. It will put down deer just fine under most conditions. Something else of similar power in an AR-15 would do the same.

OTOH, if the range is extreme, or some other condition is far less than ideal, the greater power available with the .308 cartridge might help make up the deficit. Keep in mind that no cartridge on earth will make up for poor shooting--whatever you use you'll need to practice, practice, practice with. But mebbe I'm preaching to the choir here.

Anyhow, if you want the greater oomph provided by the .308, then by all means go with the AR-10. If you're building this rifle specifically for deer then perhaps that's the way to go. Was it me, that's what I'd do.

Whatever you decide, please keep us posted. WITH PIX, please. We all love pix!

223 is very effective for deer. the AR15 is also available in 7.62x39, 6.5g and 6.8spc which are all perfectly able to deal with deer.

If you already have 7.62x39 then build the AR15 with a 7.62x39 upper.
I've heard though that they tend to have light strikes with the cheap steel ammo, remedied by using brass 7.62x39 ammo or after market firing pin.

If you reload 458 Socom upper would be an good addition. I have one its great, You can shoot 250 grain bullets to 600 grain VLDs depending on the twist rate makes an AR-15 an semi auto 45-70.
