AR Scope

I want a scope for my new Smith and Wesson M&P 15-22, how do I go about looking and what would be a good affordable scope? Thanks

hmmmn....decisions....decisions....

this is just my personal experience or observation.

there is a certain price point at least with centerfire riflescopes where the chaff really gets separated from the wheat.

I reckon that price point is right around $250.

Then, at least to me, the next price point jump in quality/reputation seems to happen again around the $500 to $700 ball park.

Then the next big jump is right at that magical one thousand dollar mark.

And then again at $1,500 on up.

I think your first decision would be do you want a cross hair reticle scope or a red dot of some sort.

If you can wait, you can easily get a near $1,000 scope, used, for closer to the $600 mark or less.

But hey, I think we are talking .22's here.

Me? Personally? I would look at something in the $150 to $250 price range.

Just and FYI...I think both Leupold and Burris are both made here in the States and both come with lifetime warranties.

In fact....I have heard of people returning scopes to Leupold with absolutely nothing wrong with them. Then Leupold turns around and sells them as factory seconds or refurbs.

That might be worth a call.

For a .22 rimfire on an AR platform I would imagine you are more interested in using it to 100 yds or a bit more. You don't need a lot of magnification or expensive glass to see well to 100 yds. There won't be much recoil to beat it up either.

I would consider a red dot scope like the Vortex or Primary Arms ones for $100 or less. I have an Aimpoint PRO on one of my ARs and love it out to 150 yds. Very fast on target and accurate enough to improve my hits on 5" clay pigeons at 100 yds than just using irons. Worth it for my AR ut I would not spend $400 on a utility .22LR rifle. It would be a chance to see if you like the red dot concept if you plan to get, or already have, an AR in 5.56 for defense. Most red dot sights for the AR come with a built-in riser and picatinny rail mount.

If you prefer magnification there are lots of 2x, or low variable 1-3x, 2-7x scopes in the $150 range. Try Weaver, Redfield, etc. I have a Weaver 1-3x on another AR and it is pretty good for the price. You will need either high scope rings or one of the special purpose AR high rise mounts with built in rings.

All of these are less that $200. I prefer the Nikon stuff because of the return-to-zero turrets, but I also own some Mueller optics, and they're nice scopes for the money:

Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40
Nikon P22 2-8x32
Mueller APT 4.5-14x40

For a reddot, I'd look at Primary Arms.

Vortex makes the diamondback...or some such.... For $99. Its hit-or-miss chinese. But with the 24x zoom you can see the .22 holes in paper. Plus vortex has a no limit warrenty so you could trade it back every time it broke.

That red dot that was reviewed on here yesturday can be had for $180. It got some good reviews, and more options than you can get in the $450 reddot range. Can't remember the name though.

Really depends on what kinda scope you want.

Ouch, some good and some bad advice here.

What most do not understand is that the 22 LR in a semi-auto is a blow back system and not a locking bolt. So the wear and tear on a scope is different than you will find on a normal AR.

I could tell you to get brand A or B or C. But the best advice is to go to rimfirecentral.com http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/index.php and ask those that use that weapon system what works for them.

Try this site as well:

That is GOOD advice.

For a .22lr scope, not tactical hoohah, go with the $45.00 Bushnell rimfire scope. Either 4x or 3-9x. Outstanding clarity and it works great.

.

So are you saying a scope that can handle centerfire .223 can't necessarily handle .22LR because its a blow back system? If that's what you are saying I have never heard that before:confused:

if semi auto 22s tore up scopes youd see alot of trashed cheap scopes out there. My mp22 wears a vortex red dot. For what i use it for it works best. If i was going to put a scope on it id find an inexpensive scope with paralex set for a .22 and be done with it.
