AR Scope Mounting

A good friend of mine just made his first venture into the world of the AR. His son gave him a lower and he assembled it and purchased an upper.

As you can see in the picture, the rifle is a flat top with a Picatinny rail on top of the upper recevier, a free float tube forend and some more Picatinny groves on top of the gas block.

Now, here is the problem...how to mate up this scope with this rifle?

The scope is a vintage Balvar 24 target scope that mounts with 3/8" wedge block like target shooters use.

I guess the question is, does anyone know of a rail/scope mount adapter that could be used to make this happen. I know you can buy free float "tubes" that are "all rail", but he really doesn't want to do that. Any suggestions would be helpful.

I'm throwing this out and seeing what happens. Give me some help guys.

Thanks!

Wow!

That is one heck of a scope!, I know this is of no help, but wanted to express my surprize

I don't know what the eye relief on that scope is- but it does appear to be a relative of the Unertle scopes that were mounted on the barrels and not always the receiver. Judging from the photo- I 'might' suggest doing away with that particular freefloat tube and picking up the railed type (the one that looks like a corncob). If those bases are Weaver style- then mount to the handguard. If not- you may be in for a heck of a job in searching for that kind of adaptor.

I know it's not a lot of help, but I think the only way that's going to happen is with a custom made set of mounts from a machine shop.

I would also be concerned about any flex that might occur between the receiver and the handguard, and its effects on zero, it wouldnt take much given the distance between the mounts (or maybe it would take a lot, I may have things reversed) either way, I think it would be detremental to accuracy.

I guess I say all of that to say this,
I think that you would be much better placed to spend the money that would have gone to custom mounts on a scope that is a little more modern and maybe a little more appropriate to it's expected use (i.e. semi-automatic fire).

That said, that scope is awesome, I've got an older .308 that I've wanted to build up as a "vintage" style target rifle. Something along those lines would look incredible.
