AR Rear Iron Sight Placement

New to the AR platform and getting my together. Any advise on locating the iron sight on the flat top upper? For now I'll only have the iron sights, so optics placement isn't a factor for now. I realize some of it is personal preference, but any advise on where to start with the placement on the rail? Thanks.
 
One to two slots prior to the rear most slot, you still have to charge the weapon and your sight should not interfer with that.

And if I may add, the closer the rear sight is to your eye, the larger the aperture will be, and reduces the whole 'peep' concept. I'm considering a much smaller one for my AR, like with my Garand. The one that came with it basically makes it more of a ghost ring.
