I am in the market for a ar15 type rifle , i do not know alot about the rifle ,except the caliber . m4 a2 and such i dont know , i am not looking for match grade , but somehting to punch holes in paper and i can upgrade parts later, at the lowest cost . any help is appreciated. thanks

Best AR for the money now is the Bushmaster HBAR(heavy barrel) 20" barrel with A2 sites. This is a chrome lined barreled post ban model(no flash suppressor) Will cost you between $730 to $800 to buy. If you want to go lower on price, you could build one up for around $550, but being a newbie, may have problems with some kits as some aren't too user friendly and need some modification to get to work right.

For a good AR15 that will hold it's resale value as much as possible I also agree with the Bushmaster suggestions.

One suggestion about the price. Seriously consider ordering one instead of buying locally unless the local dealer can match the price. I haven't seen a local dealer yet that could match the internet price plus FFL fee. I usually figure about $25 for FFl fee and another 10 for shipping. http://www.ar15.tv/ these guys have pretty fair prices on complete AR's as well as components.

Bushmaster barrels are also Chrome lined. This aids in corrosion resistance and is generally reccomended, though not completely necessary.

Either the standard A2 or A2 Car.."short 16 inch version" will do just fine.

For premium quality, but for a premium price, I suggest ArmaLite or Bushmaster.
For decent quality at a decent price, I'd go with Rock River Arms.

Stoli&Cranberry, what have you found that is not "premium" about RRA rifles? Myself and many other Highpower competitors use them with no complaints.

I've also heard many favorable reviews on RRA AR's. I have yet to hear of a negative report. AR15.com chose them to build their limited edition rifles so there must be something to the company.

The only difference I would see is that they barrels are not chrome lined. That is of no consequence to target shooters that prefer non chrome lined barrels as well as the recreational shooter.

I even plan on building a rifle on a RR lower once I get my BM finally completed. But then it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to stock up on extra lowers anyway. Too bad I didn't think about that prior to 94..I'd be sitting on a gold mine!:D

I built a very nice gun from a PWA receiver and Sherluk kit for about $500. I just assembled the lower, the rest was ready to go. I haven't noticed any qualitative difference with any similar name brand rifle, but I don't have a chromed bore. It will fit all mags and the finish is black (two complaints about some Bushmasters). It's a money saving way to go if you're patient.

Olympic Arms does a decent job, but their $500 Plinker model is crummy looking.

Get the chromed barrel!!

The main reason for chromed barrels is so that you can fire faster, and shoot more. A chromed barrel does not erode as quickly.

Fastest way to completely ruin a rifle is rapid firing, unless you have a chromed bore. My AR has a Armalite upper, 20 inch, with 1x9 twist, and chromed bore. After running a few banana clips through, I can put on the scope and still shoot well under 1 MOA at 100 yards with ball ammo.

Steve Smith, I made the comparision between my RRA rifle and my ArmaLite rifle and without a doubt RRA is a great rifle for the price and can see why competitors would choose it, but IMHO I think ArmaLite rifles have just a tad better quality of finish and workmanship on their product. Really nothing to do with how well a rifle would do in competition.
I was just being nit-picky. :)

FWIW, RRA offers chrome lined barrels, the AR15.COM LEGP just happened not to have that due to the extra cost. They decided to put the money into other features. I really like my LEGP, and I doubt I'll be able to wear the barrel out anytime soon, even without chrome lining. :)

Rock River makes good rifles for the dollar. Only reason I really prefer ArmaLites is because, at least in my vicinity, ArmaLite runs about the same as Bushmaster with a better warranty and I have trouble finding Rock River rifles.
