Just wondering is the barrel nut made of steel or aluminium and why there are teeth on it? Is this just to hold the handguard in place?

USGI barrel nuts are steel. The teeth are there so you can put a wrench on it and route the gas tube through it.

And they also help align the handguards

GI nuts are steel and use the teeth for the wrench. Some aftermarket nuts are aluminum, common on free floated hand guards.
