AR, M-1 carbine or PC4

I'm looking for a plinking/varmint gun with the potential to be used for a "SHTF" situation.

Accurate to 2-3" at 100 yards, reliable, low recoil and under $700.

I like the 9mm carbine idea but in my experience accuracy is pretty much done at 75 yards. The M-1 sounds intrigueing but not sure about accuracy. The AR would do the trick but prices seem to be rising over the $700 level lately.

Any help on this topic would be appreciated.

out of those 3, i would definately go with an AR. i own an AR, an AK, and an M1 carbine (an original inland.) the M1 carbine is a neat rifle but the ammo is $$$ and its not THAT accurate up around 100 yards. and of course the ballistics suck. better than a pistol but not much else. screw the pc4 carbine. an AR may be expensive up front but has much cheaper ammo and accesories than a pc4 or M1.

How about an Armalite 180B? Better reliability IMHO, than an AR, takes AR mags, and I believe it's "suggested retail" is less than $600.

Hell, what about an M1 Garand? You can get a dane through CMP for $400. It is very accurate and will kill just about anything in north america, two or four legged.

well, M1 is nice.. but 100 yards is kinda marginal.. I have one and it is part of a my go kit. but for Ammo.. all I can say is..

Build a AR from a kit. Look for the low prices and you should be able to build for around $500.
The thing that always stuck in my mind about the M1 carbine, and I really like them, have 2 of them, up to 200 yds, they are nice and accurate. The bullet drop from 200 to 300 yds. is 17 1/2 inches. Man, that's a hell of a drop.
Compared to the .223, it drops 5.5 inches from 200 to 300 yds.

AR180b

thanks for the info;
regarding the 180b--Armalite has removed the rifle from their webpage and a local dealer said they won't ship until after the first of the year. the price is definately right but I'm a bit gunshy about getting one given the problems they've had bring it to market.

I like Armalites... I own 2 1/2 of them (AR10 w/ .308 & .243 uppers, AR15), and while the AR180B looks tempting, I'm gonna take a wait & see with this one. I'll let someone else be in the experimental group.

Put one together and save a bit of money.

JT Dist CAR or Full Size AR kit for $435.00+15 shipping= $450

Bushmaster Stripped lower 160+10 shipping+25 Dealer FFL fee(average for your dealer to recieve)=$195

There ya go...you have an AR15 for $650.

You can even cut costs by $50 or more by ordering a Rock River or Oly Arms lower.

The great thing about it is that you get to learn more about your weapon by assembling all the parts onto your lower. The upper comes completely assembled so all you have to do is assemble the lower, stick on the upper and go have fun!

Good Shooting
