AR internal wear Q

Cleaning the bushmaster 16" tonight, notice the inside coating on the sides of the receiver are worn. As in the paint or finish is coming off in just about every place around the BCG. Is this normal or just poor finish from bushmaster? Another though I had was am I not putting lube on the entire BCG and its rubbing everything? What do you guys think is going on, or is it normal? Thanks!

Pretty standard. All the force of the carrier cycling is pushed into those points, so the finish WILL wear. I have a Wilson Combat AR that I built only about 7 or 8 months ago and have only put a few hundred rounds through, and the finish is wearing in the same place as yours.

That makes me feel a little better, but at the same time, not. I wonder if a little extra lube will make a difference, it looks terrible in there now. I wonder if the "top tier" AR's have a better finish that holds up better.

You have steel running on Anodized aluminum. There will be wear. Luckily the area doesn't really bear much load or have any bearing on accuracy. You run more risk of fouling things up with more lube than just letting normal wear happen.

Nope.

If it shines, lube it. Metal is wearing on metal, and that means there's friction. Friction will call things to a halt if there isn't lubrication, whether it's an AR-15 or a small block V-8.

Grease up your bolt!

The wear is normal... but I'm also better you aren't using enough lube on your bolt and carrier.

There's a pretty good video on YouTube by James Yeager on lubing your AR. He's kind of a jerk as a guy, but this is a good video. I've been following this method for a while with no ill effects.

On the advice of a trusted and knowledgeable friend I run every part in my BCG "wet" except the firing pin and it has worked well for me.

I grease the bolt from the beginning at the normal contact points and don't notice "wear" inside the receiver.

I didn't say no lube. Run it wet is all fine and good until your wet attracts dirt, lots of dirt. I use TW-25B when mine are range queening, guess what, the surface coating is still worn off.

I put a few drops of 10w30 on mine before a competition, etc. and it works fine, no malfunctions. The bolt carrier should look like it is soaked in oil. Just keep the dust cover closed when you aren't shooting.

If you look at your bolt carrier you well see four "rails" one on each side of the key and two on the bottom of the carrier directly below the key. These are the contact points for the bolt carrier, you should have a light coating of light rifle grease, like Tetra grease on these.

The upper may have type II or type III coating the type II wears faster. Wear in the area these rails slide is completely normal. MEAL, mags, extractor, ammo, LUBE.
