AR Front Sight Question

Hey all, planning on removing my front sight from my AR in place of a railed gas block/flip up front sight combo.

Question though. If I remove my A2 front sight, does the handguard ring right behind it go too? I need this to mount my existing drop in carbine length handguard.

Do I need to look at a different handguard, or does the ring stay put?

See pics: Thanks everyone

No, they are seperate. You can remove the sight and leave the ring. There is a shoulder behind the ring and the FSB in front of it holds it in place up against the shoulder.

You might consider how the rail FSB mounts. . .The tapered pin FSB is very tight to the barrel. Actually, you better have have a good hammer and punch for this. This is the hardest I have ever hit a gun for gunsmithing! Basically, they are bulletproof. That is why my custom scope mounted AR still has a fixed FSB. You won't see it in the scope, except a red dot. IMP, you can still work around it.

On the other hand, the set screw FSB's shoot loose for many people. You can make it work, but why don't they just make a tapered pin tail type FSB?!

That will work just fine. The clamp style are considered stronger than the set screw style. Just remember that the pins on the FSB are tapered. Look them over carefully and make sure you drive them out from the small side of the pin. If you go beating on the large side of the pin you are just driving them in tighter. I'm sure that some may be tighter than others but all the ones I have removed were fairly easy.

As others have stated, it's tough to get off but you can do it and still keep the handguards you're using now. Just be sure to use an all metal front sight since the gas block will be getting mighty hot...
