AR for my wife (help!)

OK, here's the deal. I just got the AR-15.com LEGP for my wife, and she likes it (kinda sorta). She's to the point where she has threatened to name it, and possibly search for girly accessories for it (:D).

ANWAY, my main concern:

I wanted to get the LEGP because it is a short carbine, and my wife needed something shorter than my FAL. The issue, however, seems to be the length of the butt stock, and the LEGP's, alas, is the same length as my FAL's.

Is it practical and legal to shorten the pinned telestock on an AR-15, post ban? And if so, how much? I'm aware that there are OAL issues, and I do NOT want to stray into BATF territory.

Thanks,
Mike

I do know that one company was making post-ban stocks that could be measured and fixed in the correct length. Don't ask me what company...I've slept since then. ;)

I suggest asking the great folks at J&T Distributing in Kentucky. If they don't have it, they'll point you in the right direction.

If you're not adamant about keeping the pre-ban look, an A1 buttstock should help a bit.

I Second the Recommendation for an A1 Stock

Mike,

You have a couple of options here, One is to buy a good pre-ban collapsible stock and adjust it to fit your wife. Then permanently fix it in place at that length. There are several methods you could use. Or you could follow Zander's suggestion and find which company makes the one he's talking about (I've heard of it too but don't remember who's doing it either).

Or buy an A1 stock. This will give a more secure firing platform and be 5/8 shorter then the faux collapsible on your LEGP. You will have to buy a new buffer, receiver extension tube and buffer spring. I think that unless you just have to have the "look" of the collapsible stock that this is the way you should go. It's not a hard conversion to do and many knowledgeable shooters have done this conversion on their pre-ban carbines because the A1 stock is a much better firing platform then the collapsible stock. The collapsible stock makes getting in and out of vehicles and aircraft easier, and allows you to adjust length of pull to fit diffderent shooters or different bulky clothing you might wear. But if it doesn't collapse, you don't get any of the benefits and all of the disadvantages.

It's an easy conversion to do. If you can't find anyone near you who can help, just let me know.

I ordered one of the Rock River Stocks back in the first week of March when I first saw their add. They told me 8 weeks. I waited and called back after 10weeks, and they told me 3-4 more weeks. So I waited some more and still no stock. I called them back 3 weeks ago and got a male on the phone and when I asked to check the status of my order he hung up on me. I called back and he hung up on me again. So I called again and got hung up on a third time. I called back in an hour and got a female on the phone. I told her that I ordered the stock and she told me that it would be 3-4 months longer. I don't believe I will ever see this stock. It looks like a nice stock and that is why I ordered one. If anyone else makes this stock I would like to know, because I will buy several.

Go with JBweld/pinning a preban stock to the correct position. Just remember, since you arent going to be able to use the position selector anymore, you might as well fit it at whatever length your wife likes best, even if that is a spot in-between positions.

Thanks for the replies...

What is the OAL I have to worry about maintaining? I do not repeat NOT want to start edging into BATF territory, especially since my wife will probably be the one using it.

26 inches IIRC. Souldn't be a problem if you are fixing a collapsible stock as they had to meet OAL with the stock completely collapsed. So even if you fix one in the closed position you'll be legal. I'll measure my R6920 when I get home, but I think it's about 31" with the stock collapsed all the way.

OAL of Colt R6920

Mike,

The overall length of my R6920 is 35" with the stock extended and 31" with it fully collapsed. So you can fix the stock in any length you want and still be legal as long as you stick with the 16" barrel on you LEGP.

Jeesh

Are you SERIOUS?

I can pin it fully closed and its legal? I can pin it fully open and its legal? I just can't move it in between?

Gotta LOVE gun laws. LMAO. I figured there was some semblance of logic here- that closing it past a certain point would make it hysterically illegal. But no...

Thanks,
Mike

the act of telescoping or folding is the evil feature

i think that if the gun met overall length requirements, you could fold a stock, pin it and be legal

the whole 94 law (mainly the work of Schumer) is based on the weapons appearence

The antis really thought that it would end Semiauto Assault Weapon sales

we are expoliting a loophole that lets us have rifles below a visual feature count level

Actually, for the NFA's short barreled firearm definitions, all measurements are taken with stocks fully extended or unfolded. Someone could take an NEF 12gauge, cut the barrel to 18.1" and add a folding stock that added 8" to the gun while unfolded and it would be legal, even though with the stock folded it would only be like 20" long.
