AR blowing air with every shot

Greetings,
I just upgraded my AR with a Yankee Hill Machining complete upper and Magpul six position butstock. Today while shooting the rifle for the first time since the upgrade I noticed that the gun was blowing air on my face with every shot. The YHM upper has a muzzle brake and a flash hider. My previous upper wa a pre ban colt with no MB or flash hider. I was shooting in sitting position at a local range. The upper has a 16 inch barrel. The blown air is not hot but a bit forceful. Is it because of the MB or there is someting wrong with the gun?

Any comments or help is appreciated.

Muzzle brakes will do that. I got hit by a very focused jet of air from four tables away by a guy shooting his 308 with brake.

Never experienced this, but heard about it especially on suppressed ARs. You might look at the "gas buster" charging handles at Brownells, Midway USA, Bravo Co, Delton, etc.

This.

Several makers of these types of charging handles that redirect the gas. There's a DIY using RTV that works for some folks.

Brakes and suppressors well cause more gas being directed to the rear.

My RRA middy upper does the same thing... I just figured it was bleed gas from the bolt opening. Another reason to always wear safety glasses...

My Colt H-Bar does not.

Not unusual with ARs, especially braked or suppressed ones. If it bothers you, the RTV sealant fix is both more effective and cheaper than a Gasbuster charging handle (and I own a Gasbuster charging handle).

Yes the MB ports to the rear.

What is the solution to bolt leaking gas. Are you OK with your RRA upper blowing gas to your face. My Colt HBAR also does not do this.

Can you tell me more about how to use RTV sealant. I am looking to buy the Gasbuster charging handle.

Thanks all of you folks.

Here's a good link on the diy mod instead of paying for the gas buster handle.

It can't hurt to buy the official part and keep your original as a spare but I think they're a little pricy for what they are.

I shot a 11.5" AR pistol today and will definitely remove the fancy flash suppressor/muzzle brake. Massive blast in the face with every shot very similar to a 44 mag 4". Don't need that at all. I had one years ago but left the muzzle gadgets off and it wasn't too bad to shoot. Soon as I get a thread protector, that gizmo is coming off.

My 16" RRA did this as well. I tried the RTV solution and it worked for a few mags, then the RTV came off. Frankly just shooting it and not over lubricating it seemed to make the problem go away. I assume some carbon fills in the leaky parts.

My RRA is pretty new, I've only had it to the range 3 times and I'm still shaking it down. I thought the gas was just a fluke to the mid-length gas system until I read your thread. I don't know if I will even bother with it unless it gets worse.

I run my bolt wet, why would running more lube make a condition like that worse?

Actually, minus any blowback from the muzzle brake, where is the gas coming from? The bolt ports or the gas tube when the carrier starts back?
