AR-15 Which Brand? Model?

I am looking for a "budget" AR-15. My IPSC club is looking to run more "3 gun matches" next year, and I need a semi-auto to compete. Looked at Ruger Mini-14's in 223, but from what I've read they're not very accurate. Saw an article about DPMS's new "Lo Pro" AR15 with the frills gone and at a reasonable price (around $600-700). Any other ideas out there? Is the Mini-14 really that bad?

Bushmasters can...

...be had for relatively reasonable prices if you shop around. Only a little more than a DPMS for what is, in my opinion, a better quality rifle.

I own an Olympic Arms PCR 99. Had an initial problem (the chamber was a smidge too tight) that Oly Arms took care of for me, and since then it's been just a great little rifle. Figure I saved $100-150 minimum over the Bushmaster, which paid for the extra mags that I got. I know that Oly Arms had some quality problems in the past, but in my experience that's definitely "in the past". And you should be able to find one NIB in your price range.

Go to the message boards at www.subguns.com and see what people have for sale there. Also, check out the equiptment exchange over at www.ar15.com , they always have a lot of great deals on rifles. Personally, I would not buy a rifle brand new for the simple reason of competeing. New guns are overrated. The best fit, finish, and function for the money these days with be a RRA rifle. Usually they sell complete over on AR15.com for $645-$695. If you can beat that, than you are doing one heck of a feat! Or, you could probably build one yourself for about $425. Good luck.

Here, RRA for $695 http://www.gunsmoke-inc.com/

I have a pre-ban Armalite and I recently picked up an RRA.

IMO, the quality and finish of the RRA is better.

Can't vouch for the BM, but have heard they're great rifles too.

I've got a Colt Sporter I picked up years ago, it's a fine rifle. However, if I was looking today I'd stick with Bushmaster or Armalite.

If you're looking for a lightweight AR, check out the Carbon 15. I don't know anything personally about them but Gun Tests gave it a rave review.

RRA = Rock River Arms. Same ol AR rifles as the others, jsut a newer company. I understand they produce some excellent stuff too, worth checking out.

Original question: If you get the cheapest Ar you can find you may not get something you're all to happy with. Go with something a little higher up the scale an you will be happy, it will be worth the extra hundred bucks. And which one - there is a reason that 3 of my 5 ARs are Bushmasters...

Everywhere I check, they all have heavy barrels on them.

Bushmaster offers barrels in different configurations other than heavy. You could also send your rifle to Kurts Kustom Firearms to have him take off metal on a heavy barrel to lose a pound or so.Try asking this question over at www.ar15.com .
