Ar-15 upper compatibility

Hi, new poster here. I signed up to almost exclusively ask this question (along with having some firearm related talk along the way)

I have a DPMS Oracle, is changing the caliber you want to fire as simple as changing out your stock 5.56 upper for say a .22 lr upper if I wanted to use it for some cheap plinking? Or am I oversimplifying?

Wrathin, welcome to TFL!

It is that simple. Pull the takedown pin and pivot pin, pull off your upper, and replace with a dedicated .22lr upper with its own bolt and magazine. There are a number of manufacturers out there who make dedicated uppers, and the .22lr ones might be easier to find right now in the panic buying.

There is also another option that uses your 5.56 or .223 upper. You replace your bolt carrier group with a unit, sometimes referred to as a Ceiner conversion, and utilize its magazine, and you are in business. To see what I mean, go out to CMMG's website and they offer some different models.

I don't use either product, but I know some on here do and you will likely receive some recommendations shortly.

I would recommend the complete .22 upper over one of the conversions. I had one that came with my Colt H-bar. It would work, usually, but the accuracy was not good. My buddy had a complete upper and it was much, much better regarding accuracy and reliability. I believe his was a CZ. I'm not sure who makes them these days but I know that several are available.
