AR-15 questions

The money tree came into bloom and I find myself thinking I want/need an AR15, but know very little about them.
I know there's Colt & Bushmaster, pre & post ban. What do I look for and what can one expect to pay? Help me out on the pre/post ban thing. Can I use a high cap magazine on a post ban rifle?

I have been a proud bushmaster owner for 1 1/2 years now. 2500rds with no jams (except 1 with a low powered lot of Wolf ammo). I obviously would recommend them. You are paying more for the Colt name, they (colt) also have a different size pivit(I think) pin while everybody else uses the standard mil-spec size.

Pre-ban: You pay more, get collapsable stock if you like that and a bayonet. The only functional thing I like about prebans is the flash hider.

Post-ban: cheaper, does everything pre does. no flash hider(do you really need it though?

The '94 mag restriction & AW ban has nothing to do with what you can put in your gun. As long as it has no date code/not restricted/ pre 94 date you are ok in a post ban.

All of your questions can be answered at THE site for AR15 information:

http://www.AR15.com

There are several message boards there with plenty of people willing to volunteer their information.

;)

There are many manufacturers of AR15 style rifles out there:

Armalite, Olympic Arms, DPMS;

And so many makers/builders/assemblers I can't even begin to name them all.

http://www.AR15.com has all the info on most of them.

Good Luck.

Here's a good overview: http://snipercountry.com/AR15_part1.htm.

Post-ban Bushmaster for approx $800. Pre-ban Colt for approx $1200. Both depend on configuration.

Good case can be made that the post bans give you better "bang for the buck" and, arguably, will be more accurate with a good barrel sans flash hider / muzzle break. Only real reason to buy a pre-ban is to retain the option of adding features that would otherwise be illegal. If you want an accurate shooting rifle and will be going with a 20" or longer barrel, post-ban's probably your best bet. If you want to build a carbine, though, you'll want an effective flash hider, so pre-ban may be the preferred option. All comes down to what you want/need. If that money-tree is laden, go with the pre-ban for the sake of flexibility.

Here's what I did...

... Bought a stripped lower receiver at the gunshow this last weekend, and plan on buying a kit that has everything else. The beauty is, you need to go through the NICS check for the lower, but you do not for the upper, and all the other parts! I shopped around, and probably the least expensive route to complete my Black Rifle are from Olympic Arms. I can get EVERYTHING I need to complete my rifle for $450! (and ordering from another state, there's no sales taxes!!)

I think the most reputable companies that manufacture ARs are Bushmaster, Colt, Rock River Arms, DPMS and Olympic.

Definitely check out ar-15.com, lots of helpful stuff, and helpful people there!

(One thing I love about the shooting community, is that everyone is so darn polite and helpful and respectful!)

A co-worker told me this evening that he has a complete Bushmaster lower he would part with, along with manuals, tools, cleaning equip. and several 30rd mags.
"Make me an offer" he says. What's it worth?

In Switzerland, if we go shopping for ARs, we have the ABCD Rule:

1 Armalite
2 Bushmaster
3 Colt
4 DPMS

They all work, especially if one uses the Swiss Army cleaning kit with
the 'propeller' chamber brush (the 'prop' is the handle, you put the
brush into the chamber, hold the barrel between your knees and turn
that brush 20 times with a good solvent).
