AR-15 Question

Bottom Gun

New member
I'm considering buying an AR-15 from a private owner but the gentleman doesn't know what the twist rate is.
It's a Colt Match Target Rifle Model 6551 with a heavy barrel.

Can anyone tell what what rate of twist these rifles were made with?

more questions:

What is the ideal twist rate for 52-55 gr bullets?

Any idea what kind of accuracy I can expect using these bullets in one of the faster twist barrels such as a 1 in 7 or 1 in 9?

Thanks for your help.

"What is the ideal twist rate for 52-55 gr bullets?"
1:9 is probably the preferred twist.
1:7 is preferred for heavier bulllets but will work fine for most shooting applications, even with 55grn bullets.

I don't know what the rate of your barrel is (it should be stamped on the barrel) I would guess 1:9 - 1:12.

This link should help you a little.

Have the guy look on the barrel, by the front site tower. It should say something like C MP 5.56 NATO 1/? HBAR. I beleive they only came with 1/7 or 1/9. I don't beleive the HBAR's came 1/12. If your going to shoot the 52's or 55's a 1/9 would be better than a 1/7.
If it's not a real Colt barrel, your on your own.

If it's not stamped on the barrel, (it is on all the Colts I've seen), use the cleaning rod with the tape flag method and measure the twist.

Thanks for the help, Guys.

The seller says the barrel isn't marked (I haven't seen the rifle in person) but I was able to determine from the Colt website that this one has a 1 in 7 twist.

On that note, I'm going to pass on buying this one since people are telling me that twist won't stabilize the 50-55 gr bullets as well as a slower twist will.

Back to the search. . . . . .

all my AR's are colts and the twist is on the barrel on every one of them.....has something been changed on the one you're looking at????? there is a pawn shop here in town that will sell you a post ban with a preban configuration in a minute so you may want to go to one of the ser # sites to see when it was made--you know that since colt doesn't put the model # on the receiver it's damn hard to tell what they are sometimes......Dick

Try here-- http://websearch.cs.com/gateway/res...PWA firearms&type=I&brand=GWY&uType=&gfirst=0

on the twist issue--i personally think the 1 X 7 is the most versatile--mine shoot the 55's just fine and if i put in one of the 80gr boattails i can really show you something at long ranges...
