I'm looking to get some optics for my AR and would love a trijicon ACOG, however I cant afford it right now. Any suggestions for a cheaper alternative??
a vortex strikefire red dot. highly rated, comes with 2x magnafier. do some research and check out youtube. i have one, easy to co witness, red and green dot, night vision capable, multiple brightness settings. cost about $150.
100yds or less you can't beat a red dot like the Aimpoint PRO, but for any precision past 100yds you are much better off with a traditional rifle scope type optic like a 3-9 x whatever. I had a ACOG and yes they are built like a tank, but as I said before at the end of the day all I had was a really nice expensive 4x fixed rifle scope.
Check out the Bushnell TRS-25. It is a great sight for the money (around $100). Mine has held up very well and has never lost its zero. Seems to be really rugged and battery life is very good. It weighs next to nothing and with a 3/4" riser it co-witnesses with my BUIS nicely. Optics Planet has several reviews and they all are very favorable.
Im very happy with my vortex strilefire red dot. Its a great high value option. However, If you are looking for any kind of magnification you might look elsewhere. The 2x magnifier is pretty much worthless IMO. I orginally wanted an AIMpoint or EOtech but couldnt afford one so I settled for the Vortex. Its been a great purchase so far
Most people that have ARs including myself have more than one optic and some have a few for there ARs so don't get hung up on this has to be the perfect choice because you will be buying another one.....
I have a Lucid on a 5.45x39 AR, a Primary Arms on a .22 AR, and Bushnell TRS-25 on a converted Saiga and a Aimpoint Pro on my HD AR. If your AR is going to be set up for serious purposes, the Aimpoint PRO is tough to beat at $400. If your AR is a range toy, any of the other three RDS' will work just fine and not break the bank.
