AR-15 optics

I am looking for a CQB sight for my M4 Bushmaster. I am thinking about either an EOTECH, Aimpoint or possiblt a C-More. Although the Trijicon reflex is probably better than any of the above because it doesn't need batteries but I remember in years past some tritium sights had about a 10 year life span because of half-life. Is this still an issue? As i've gotten older the standard battlesights don't work as well with dimming vision. Any advice would be a help.

you wont find many people who recomend the trij reflex. just too darn dim in bright conditions, sometimes so much so that youll just have to use the irons anyway. not really a problem, if youre just using it on a gun for play. if its your life were talking about, batterys arent too big a deal. my money is either on the eotech or aimpoint (batters last a long time in either). i prefer the astetics of the aimpoint. the bigger dot works for me too. just feels faster. i dont think you would go wrong with either. the trij acog, doesnt have the fading problem because the reticle is etched like a regular scope. and also glows if its dark with tritium and fiberoptic. now, if you want an acog, i have a 2x model for sail on this forum, in the fs/ft section ;)

The Triji reflex I shot was just fine in bright sunlight. Every bit as much as my Eotech. The Eotechs that use the "N" batteries have very short lifespans while the Aimpoint will last several days "on". C Mores are great but have some parrallax issues at longer ranges.

If you're thinking CQB with night possibilities then you want sight you can leave on a long time without failure or a tritium retical.

I really love my Eotech. It is the 552.a56. Uses the AA batteries. No problem in any light conditions so far. I live in AZ so i have had the chance to shoot in very bright light. the hood really helps out a lot. I would love to try the NV feature one day. Though right now I have other projects going eating up my funds. BTW, I cowitnessed with iron. I have a flat top bushy.

aim straight and have fun

...while the Aimpoint will last several days "on".
They will last quite a bit longer than that. The M2 series have a claimed battery life of 10,000 hours and the M3's 50,000. Even if you were to half it, your still talking better than 6 months 24/7 for the M2 and almost 3 years for the M3. I've already left one of mine on for over a couple of weeks with no loss of dot brightness. I dont know how long they will really last, and I'm sure the claimed hours are probably at the lowest setting, but mine have held up well. I have yet to have one go dead on me, but I change them out twice a year anyway, needed or not. Clocks, smoke detectors and Aimpoints. :)

I have a couple of ML2's and a M2 and like them very much. I have the M2 on a GG&G cantilever mount on my Armalite flat top. Very fast and easy to use and co-witnesses with the BUIS.

I've tried a couple of the "heads up" type sights like the Eotech and didnt like them. They all sat to high for me, blocked the sights and I always felt like I was "looking for" the dot instead of instantly "looking at it" on the target when I shoulder the rifle.

the problem in the reflex is when shooting from a dark area into a lighted area. on the range, that isnt usually a problem, but in the real world, it can be. delta said he was looking for a cqb sight, and if he is inside a house being engaged by someone outside, there is a chance that his dot will wash out and that could be bad

AIMPOINT Batteries last an obscenely long time.

As long as you turn it off when the gun is not in action, you're good for a LONG time.

eotechs are great for cqb, but its reticle doesnt quite lend itself to precision.
both aimpoint and eotech are great for battery life. but my theory is that if i'm going to spend a good chunk of change on an optic, i can also afford to replace batteries.

after handling a reflex, i decided its filter was just too distracting for my eyes. played with the eotech, but couldnt fall in love with it. not like i did with the tri-power from trijicon. i wish more optics from various manufacturers would use the chevron reticle. that provides such a precise aiming point its unbelievable. sub-moa out to 100 yards is very doable, even for me, and i stink at shooting. not to mention that the tri-power excels over the reflex and acogs in that it has multiple power sources, truly allowing for use in any light!

yes the tri-power is more expensive. but for me, its worth it.

EOTech

My first experience with EOTech's was on my patrol rifle at work. My second was shortly after when I purchased one for my personal gun. I much preferred it to the aimpoint, as I would rather not look through a tube. I found that my target aquistion time was much quicker with the EOT than with a dot, but that could just be me.
I mounted mine on forward rail on custom AR, then got RRA tactical optics rail and mounted it on receiver. Even with EOTech off, I can still use irons with no time lost, which is a useful feature in my book.

I'm probably gonna take some heat for this one, but here it goes......

Don't get me wrong, if I could afford it I would buy an Eotech, but since I can't I had to find an alternative. Burris came out with the XTS-135 in May of this year for only $200. I did about two months worth of research before buying it for my ArmaLite carbine. It's one tough little bastard too. It's water proof, and shock proof enough to handle recoil from a .50 cal. It uses the same rings as an Aimpoint too. Has a 3 MOA dot with 11 brightness settings.

I don't know what your budget is, but if it's tight, I love my Burris. The only draw backs are that it doesn't use the c123 3volt lithiums. It uses the watch style batteries and the battery life is only about 200 hours.

Good Hunting.

PS- If you are deciding between a single pane optic like the Eotech and a dual pane like the Aimpoint or Burris, a friend of mine in 7th SF has ran into problems with the Aimpoint fogging up with large changes in humidity. The example he used was moving from a car with AC to the dry desert air when he was in Afganistan. That's why he switched to the Eotech.

Hi there, all. I'm brand new, and joined this site specifically to look for info on my new scope, and see how people liked / disliked it. I'm deploying in December, and my unit did not have enough Aimpoint scopes to go around. So I purchased one myself. I don't know all the lingo, but I bought an Aimpoint Comp M3 4 MOA. I like that it has the rubber cover over the whole scope for when I'm in rough enviro, and that it can be used with NVG's. My M16 doesn't have rail systems on it yet, so I got the "z" type rail mount.

I'm zeroing with it on Thursday, so we'll see how she does!

Glad to be here, by the way.

Emily

Don't pack a too many. Your M3 will burn 50,000 hours on setting seven out of ten on ONE battery. That's about 5 years.......
I just like being cautious.
