AR-10 Scopes. Need an opinion to sway me...

Hey everyone, I will be purchasing a Sig Sauer 716 patrol rifle in .308 whenever they hit the market.

In the meantime been thinking on scopes, have it narrowed down to 2, and just need some thoughts/comments/ideas on the system.

Here is the Rifle:

Here are the scopes.

This is my first choice: VVPST 1-4: 1-4 IR

And my second: VVPST 2.5-10: 2.5-8

This is not intended to be a long range rifle (I have a bolt action 308 for that). Either scope will be mounted in a Larue LT-104: Larue Mount

I also don't want to put a 1x red dot on it. I want to have a little more precision and range. Max range is 400 yards, but only occassionally. Below 25 yards to 200 would be average.

What I wonder about on the 1-4x is the center dot of the reticle. It's rated at 1MOA in size. Which will work, but it got me thinking of something more precise.

Who has used a minimum 2.5X scope on an AR? obviously not as good CQ as others, but tell me your experiences. No comment as long as it's on topic is bad by any means. Just need some ideas to stew on!!

Thanks all,

Your link took me to the 2.5-10x44 scope. That would be my choice. The 1-4 is a 24mm objective and the 2.5-10 is a 44mm objective, better light gathering capabilities. I like both of those scopes.

I am using a 3-9x42mm on my AR 16 inch carbine now. But will be changing it to a 4-16x44mm scope when the money comes in. My only problem is finding a compact scope (7.5 inch) in that range I can afford. Will need to go to a 13.5 inch length that will block the entire upper rail. Still trying to decide on if that's what I want to do.

A 1 MOA dot is pretty good. For precision shooting with a dot reticle, you don't put the dot over the target, you use the upper edge of the dot just like you would a front sight. The POA is the top edge of the dot. At least, that is what they taught the students at the 4 day practical rifle course I took a couple of weeks ago.

Good start everyone, keep em coming.

I agree. My red dot on my 5.56 AR is exactly that way.

my ar10 has a weaver t6 on it. i did try a larger power variable with mil dots and all it did was slow me down fiddling with it....bobn

What targets are you shooting? For "practical" targets (I shoot steel or paper in matches), a 1 MOA dot should be centered on the target. Faster, no thinking, unless there is holdover because the target is out past 225-250 yards or so.

The 1-4 is faster, that 2.5-10 is more precise. Either one, no fiddling, just holdover or sideways for windage.

Mine is the Premier Heritage. Of all the scopes we have, this is the one for me. For clarity and light (having Schott Glass) it ranks with any of the best.
