AR-10: Pre-Ban???

Is there such a thing as a pre-ban AR-10?I like the gun, but I don't want to be limited if I want to add a flash suppressor or folding stock or something.

Also, are there pre-ban mags available? I understand you can also modify M-14 mags. Is this true?

There ARE preban AR10s, but they are pretty difficult to find and were not made by the current Armalite company (which used to be Eagle Arms). The old, preban AR10s are imports and they do NOT take converted M14 mags---only the new Armalite guns do. The old guns take a waffle mag that will cost you over a hundred dollars apiece.

branrot, The current manufacture AR10's , post ban, come with a fairly nice muzzle brake installed. On mine I find it preferable to a flash suppressor. Armalite will modify M14 mags to fit the AR10 but the mags will not hold the bolt open after the last round and it's an expensive proposition. Last I heard if you send them two mags they modify and send one back. They also offer kits to modify FAL mags to fit the AR10. I havn't tried it yet but it makes good sense, if they work. FAL mags can be had for around 8 bucks while the last M14 mags I bought were 59.95 each. Check out armalites website for info on that. www.armalite.com

Several contrafactual items in this post. First, the converted M14 magazines WILL INDEED hold the bolt open on the last shot. In fact, ALL 20-round AR10 mags for the new Armalite guns ARE converted M14 mags.
Second, it is not just two for one for the conversion---Armalite offers 5 conversions for $100. Which means, if you get the $32 shipped used USGI M14 mags Coles sells, you're getting the M14 mags for $50. Which is comparable to factory HK91 mags and certainly much less than Galil 308 mags.
Third, Armalite does NOT offer a conversion kit for FAL mags because the ATF ruled that the FAL mags were too dissimilar in size to be considered a conversion and instead would be manufacturing a postban hicap.
Last, as I said, www.cole-distributing.com has used USGI M14 mags for $32 each shipped for 5 or more. Since Armalite refinishes and cleans up the mag, it doesn't matter if the finish is rough.
