approx year of manufacture model 10-7

As near as I could tell, according to my book your gun must have been built in '77. Unlike all the other variations that dash number appears to have only been used for one year. Round that time anyway. Great gun :)

The 10-7 was made from 1977 until at least 1981, perhaps even 82 or longer. Change 8 which started in 1977 involved the gas ring change only on the heavy barrel version and ran concurrently with 10-7. If you provide the serial number off the butt (omit the last number or two if you like) of the gun perhaps a more defined date of manufacture could be provided?

Richard is right.

S&W had a unique situation with the Model 10 in that they had TWO active engineering change numbers going at the same time -- one for changes made to lightweight barrels (10-7), and the other for changes made to the medium weight barrels (10-8).

That may be the only time that that has ever happened with S&W.

According to Supica and Nahaus, it appears that the 10-7 was replaced by the 10-9 in 1988, and the 10-8 was replaced by the 10-10 in the same year.

Not quite to the subject, but I bought a 10-7 with all the (bad) characteristics of 1980's Smith production, but it had a C prefix serial number that would have placed it in the early 50's (turns out the original shipping date was 1952). Apparently Smith would use the same serial number on a replacement gun if you sent one in for repair that was, well, beyond repair.

Richard and Mike are right, the 10-7 was made for quite awhile, from 1977 to 1988 and they are as common as mud.

Best,
Bill

BillA,

That's interesting. Just read on another forum about something similar. A guy bought a new S&W that serialed to a much earlier period than the engineerinig mark, don't recall the model at the moment. Anyway it appears that S&W put a batch frames into a deep freezer about 20-30 years earlier and forgot about them. One day the freezer takes a crap and they find these babies. No worse for wear they just put them into production hence the a 30 year old serial number on a recently shipped firearm. don't recall how this was verified but it's a neat story

Oh, by the way. Since I'm a S&W noobie, what "bad characteristics of the 80's" are you talking about?

Really appreciate all the replies , my specimen is in like new condition , has the tapered barrel and inside the crane is marked
c10
728xx
was just curious as this gun has the appearance of one of Smith's better jobs
Bob

Not sure about c10 but 728xx is just an assembly number. Your serial number is on the bottom of the butt. If it has aftermarket rubber grips you'll need to remove them to see it. Unless your 10-7 was made prior to 1980 you will have a three letter prefix followed by four digits such as AEF0115. If made from 1977 to 1980 you might have serial number beginning with a 2D prefix followed by five digits such as 2D00512.

Richard:
Serial number is ABH 05xx
Bob

This gun is not a piece of junk the workmanship leaves nothing to be desired

That looks to be sometime in late 1982. AAF9000 was 10/82 with ABL3999 being 12/82. Beings that ABH comes after AAH and slightly before ABL, I figure about Thanksgiving for yours give or take.
