Appleseed rifle question

Yes, the 15-22 will work fine. To get the most out of the training you will want to be able to attach a two point GI sling. You'll also want three or four magazines that are short enough that you can shoot prone.

Another good option is the low cost Marlin 795.

I've been to two Appleseeds and a mini (half day) shoot.
There were always AR types in .223 and .22 conversions, or dedicated .22 AR type rifles, on the line.

If you often shoot an AR in .223 it would make a lot of sense to use the same type of rifle in .22 for the practice.

Thanks for the replys. My biggest concern was the shooting from a prone position. The (2) mags I have are 25 rounders and very large.

This is for Smoking Gun

Reading the Appleseed rules, it says mags are to be loaded, 2 & 8, an old rule from the M1 days.

If one is using a Rifle such as the CZ452, does Appleseed allow loading 5 & 5?

I'm not smoakinggun, but I can answer this as an AS Instructor. Since not everyone shoots an M1 Garand at Appleseeds, we need to accommodate all types of rifles in all different calibers, all with different mag capacities.

As long as the student does 3 NPOA shifts/verifications on Stage 2 (one for each of the 2 targets and one after the mag change) and 4 NPOA shifts/verifications on Stage 3 (one for each of 3 targets and one for the mag change), they are good to go. These are the same number of NPOA shift/verifications that someone loading 2 and 8 would have. Also, this only applies to the stage-by-stage AQT.

Some parts of the country use the rapid-fire AQT, which is 40 rounds in 4 minutes, all 4 stages in one COF. Students transition on their own, and can use any configuration of magazines as long as transitions are done safely (mag out, cycle action, safety on).

HTH,
CJ

Trust me, you don't want to use a bolt gun for Appleseed. I tried with my 527 and failed miserably during the timed AQT. Get a couple more 10rd mags for your S&W.

Noob question since I haven't been to an Appleseed yet. Would a GSG5 (the 22LR version of the HK MP5) be an appropriate rifle for the event? The magazines are curved, not too long, about 22 round capacity. The sights are diopter and you can mount a scope on the top rail. Anybody used one at an AS event? The other rifle I was contemplating is a SIG 522 - the 22LR version of the 556, mainly because I like shooting my 556.

^ A GSG-5 will work fine for learning fundamentals (as would any rifle really). But if you're going for score, I'd recommend another option. A small sample I know, but the handful I have seen on the line have all had enough FTEs/FTFs to cause moderate to high levels of frustration. Even swapped one out with a loaner 10/22 at one event. So just make sure your GSG-5 runs well and with ammo it likes (that really goes for any shooting event, though...)

The M&P 15-22 is a great choice, IMV. I've seen plenty of those on the line and they work very well indeed. Try taking a prone position with a mag inserted (obligatory safety warning: check chamber, no round live rounds anywhere near you) and see if it'll work. The problem you're likely to encounter is the mag getting in the way of your support elbow getting underneath the rifle as much as possible. If this happens, you can try purchasing 2 10-round magazines.

10/22 us a big contender for the appleseeds .... personally i use a marlin 795 .... 10 round stick mag .... easier mag changes

I've shot High Power Across the course with a bolt gun, I shoot GSM Vintage Military Rifle Rapid fire with Bolt Guns.

Trust me, if you can do it with a Mosin or 1917 Enfield, you can do it with a CZ 452.

magazines that are short enough that you can shoot prone

That one got me with my 10/22 in the timed rounds. I had used the 10 round one all day, then used my 2nd (25 round) magazine for the AQT shoot, big disaster, couldn't find my NPOA. Next time I bring 2 10 rounders for the qualification.

loading 5 and 5 in your rifle is fine, so long as you make a mag change, you could even shoot it with a tube fed rifle.

The shoot is based on the old army qualification test. The aqt was shot originally with the 1903 springfield. I am working on sooting the score with my 1903 now

Not really. You'll be prone half the time and the long mag will just get in the way. If you can find a short 10 rounder, might work.
