Appendix Holster

Early this year Handguns Magazine had an artical on Appendix carry which also listed suggested producers of the holsters. Their April issue I think.

I remember thinking that it might be an advantage over the usual hip set up for my dynamic/combat shooting since my bad shoulder as been making it more uncomfortable.

Now that I want to review it again I have been unsuccessfully finding it. Is anyone familiar with it? Do you have any experience with it that would be helpful or a holster recommendation?

Check out "one source tactical" http://www.onesourcetactical.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=731.

They make a holster called the Ehud which works great for apendix carry. I have one and its very fast, and very easy to access. Its quite comfortable, even while sitting. If you go with an apendix carry type holster, there are a few things to keep in mind:

A. Make sure your pants are a couple sizes larger in the waist band. As with any IWB holster, you'll need your pants sized a little larger to make room for the rig.

B. Make sure your proficient with firearm safety, specifically with indexing your trigger finger.

C. If you're over weight and carry it around your midsection, this type of carry may be very uncomfortable.

D. If you need to wear a tailored suit with an open front, or another type of coat with the front open, this type of carry may not work. This type of carry works well with an untucked t-shirt or sweater.

Holsters are a very personal item.

The Ehud is a large holster. It is intentionally long for stability. The hook sticks out too far. The result is printing for many people.

You'll need to try several holsters to see what works for you.

Don Hume H715M with steel clip or leather straps/snaps

FIST #4 (leather) or K3 (kydex)

They are also IWB holsters, but in my experience, appendix carry IWB is comfortable, while IWB in other positions is not. It may be comfortable for you as well. You might try using a cheap Uncle Mike's type nylon holster around the house to see if it works for you before spending more on a good holster.

Appendix Holsters, Oh Yeah

Actually my wife has one of these put out by Nevada Leather for her PPK

I'll assume for the purpose of not having to hate you that those are not your wifes legs

I aint the smartest guy around but I'm not so dumb as to post a picture of her legs on the internet, I like to eat too well.

The picture is from Navada Leather's web sight

I love appendix carry! I have a Fist #k8 IWB ultra thin Kydex holster which I carry my S&W 642 in. It tuckable (you can wear your shirt tucked in), has an adjustable cant and a wide variety of belt loop attachments. I've had mine for a couple of years now, holds the gun very nice, easy draw, and it's not bulky at all.

check it out. http://www.fist-inc.com/holsters/k1/K8.htm

I was totally conviced this was the way to go about a year ago.

Forgive the skin...Belt clip camouflaged with cell holster. See the Sag in the belt and the "pooch" out when tucked? Concealed, but not invisible.

But after a while, I gave up on it. Sits too high; grips dig into ribs when sitting.

So I tried this;

Camouflaged the clips here, too.

Too much stuff down around my ....area. This holster was designed for hip carry, but I have a bad shoulder also; hard to twist, untuck, then draw.

OK...Chronology might be a bit off here...as a matter of fact I'm sure of it. Poetic license. Went to pocket carry first, then tried appendix again.

At any rate, went to lighter Kahr PM9 in a Galco Deep Cover (note: not the UDC (Ultra Deep Cover), which uses a skinny little J-clip that doesn't maintain holster position at all...tried with other firearms..different thread).

Not as stable a platform as the High Noon Alter Ego...but doesn't dig into your ribs; hits in the crotch joint instead when sitting...marginally more comfortable.

I now pocket carry, everyday. When driving I pull it out a bit to make it more accessible.

Hell..got into the appendix carry discussion mode...took some more pics!

Seecamp LWS32:
The appendix carry Galco Deep Cover (never tried the Ultra Deep Cover Seecamp) is comfortable and effective.....but....Everthing is comfortable with Seecamp! I still mostly pocket carry.

Here is an Ultimate Second Amendment Galco with a S&W 442 Airweight...the wimpy little J-hook lets it drift around...but I still use it on occasion...the "organic curves" of the S&W keep it pretty comfortable, regardless.

Now...what I realized as I was putting this all together...
I shot the pics of me wearing the IWB (tuckable all, BTW) S&W442 and Seecamp holsters tonight for this thread.

While demonstrating the concealability of these appendix carry IWB's, I had my Kahr PM in my right front pocket in a Nemesis the entire time. I wasn't posing to conceal it to prove a point. I truly didn't consider it until uploading the pics; it's just always there. Hmmmm.

Sorry....I'm sticking with pocket carry...and Nemesis Holsters.

Having a shirt tucked in over a gun in any position doesn't work for me- too slow to draw. The closest thing to it that I like is Smartcarry, and that's kind of slow also.

With an untucked shirt, appendix carry shines. Quickest/easiest access, least amount of printing. Does require finding that "sweet spot".

I've pocket carried on occasion, but it has its own drawbacks: 1)where to put all the crap you normally carry in that pocket, 2) difficult to get a good grip on and draw an auto from the pocket (not a problem with a J-frame),and 3) gun weight can be hard on flimsy pocket linings.
