Secret Service Agent Guarding First Lady Has Gun Stolen
The Associated Press

CHICAGO (AP) - A Secret Service agent assigned to protect first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton during a visit to Chicago last fall had her gun stolen at a hotel bar that same day, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Tuesday.
Citing statements from officials and court testimony, the newspaper said the gun was in veteran agent Mary Drury's purse under her chair when it was taken Oct. 27 at the Fairmont Hotel. Drury had guarded Clinton at the Fairmont earlier that day but was off-duty at the time of the theft.

Kenneth Blake, a heroin addict who has been arrested 39 times, was charged with possessing the stolen gun. He denied he took the weapon, but at a hearing last week, Secret Service Agent William Siemer testified that Blake bragged it was his "insurance policy" if he ever got into legal trouble.

Police helped recover the gun last month in its customized Secret Service holder.

The Secret Service wouldn't comment on whether Drury was drinking when the theft happened. Even if agents aren't on duty, the Secret Service discourages them from drinking at the same location where they're protecting someone.

"It's something that shouldn't have happened from our standpoint," said Arnette Heintze, the special agent in charge of the Chicago Secret Service office. "We take it very seriously and put quite a bit of resources into the proper resolution of the case."

Heintze would not say if Drury was reprimanded.

Information about the theft surfaced late last week at Blake's hearing. Blake has pleaded innocent and is in jail awaiting trial. A federal judge approved a request that he be evaluated for drug treatment.

You can’t get nuthin past these people.

Except a gun.

Skyhawk, maybe you could edit that scrolling screen of death, man!

I couldn't believe this one; I was coming out of Chicago this morning and their radio station morning guy on WLS 890 was having a lot of fun with this. I'd left my cell phone at home or I would have called in to suggest politely that the agent (and ALL agents) should be required to keep trigger locks on their guns whenever they aren't actually drawn, or at LEAST be required to use smart guns.

Hey, let's play Spot The Inconsistencies!

1: "Veteran" agent
2: Did not have her gun on her person
3: Left the gun in a purse, which was not under her direct control
4: Not one single stinkin' word about this in the meedja until the thief's hearing, 6 months after the fact

Things that make ya go hmmmm...

Oh, and Skyhawk: PLEASE break up the maniacal laughter, k? Most of us don't do 1600x1200 screen resolution. ;)

You gotta excuse the agent's drinking after guarding Hillary all day. What, are you telling me you wouldn't be in the bar after a job like that? I don't think so.

If this had happened to a CCW holder you'd have all over complaining about how we need trigger locks and such. Good grief. A buddy of mine is applying to the Secret Service. In conversations with a senior agent he was told that making presidential detail was really difficult. You either had to be ex-military and extremely well trained or look good for the photos. The agent wouldn't elaborate. Make of this what you will.

So many pistols, so little money.

Sounds like someone actually took Clinton seriously when he said "We must take guns away from those who should not have them."

Reminds me of the time I caught a female agent leaving a loaded Glock in her unlocked file cabinet, where it was accessible to anyone who cared to look. I took it and locked it up. She eventually discovered it was missing but wasn't sure where it went.I let her sweat a while over it. She thought I was pretty mean. I thought she was pretty stupid. Needless to say, I had less than full confidence in her at any time. The truth is that all law enforcement agencies now tend to hire people (both men and women) on the basis of political correctness rather than judgement and ability. A lot of them wouldn't have got past the oral board 25 years ago.

Reminds me of a story which happened near the Swiss border in Germany
back in the eighties. Two cops decide they have to pay a visit to a
nerarby toilet to relieve pressure while patrolling a motorway. They
do so and 20 km's later, they notice they've forgotten their guns.

Now tell me anybody about the German policy to limit the number of
guns in civilian hands....
