Giuliani Has Prostate Cancer
By TIMOTHY WILLIAMS, Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK (AP) -- Mayor Rudolph Giuliani announced today he has prostate cancer, and said the disease could affect his campaign for U.S. Senate against first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton.

''It's a treatable form of prostate cancer. It was found at an early stage,'' the 55-year-old Giuliani said, sounding upbeat and frequently smiling during a news conference.

He said a biopsy was performed Wednesday, 2{ weeks after a screening test indicated the followup test was necessary. Treatment options, which include radiation and chemotherapy, have not yet been decided.

Asked how it would affect his run for the Senate, the second-term Republican mayor: ''I have no idea. ... I hope that I'd be able to run, but the choice that I'm going to make is going to be based on the treatment that's going to give me the best chance to have a complete cure.''

When pressed on whether he would continue his campaign he said: ''I don't think it's fair to answer questions about the Senate race right now. ... Should I do it? Would I be able to do it the right way? I hope that's the case but I don't know.''

The mayor noted his father died of prostate cancer in 1981, before the latest screening tests.

''It brings up very painful memories, and I miss my father every day of my life,'' he said.

Cancer of the prostate, a gland involved in semen production, is the second most common type of cancer found in American men, behind skin cancer. A total of 179,300 were diagnosed with the disease in 1999.

Treatments include removal of the chesnut-size gland and radiation. Doctors also often recommend ''watchful waiting,'' or leaving the cancer untreated, in elderly men who are more likely to die first from other ailments.

About three-quarters of men with prostate cancer have elevated levels of a protein called prostate-specific antigen -- PSA. Testing blood for PSA has been a standard screening method for older men since about 1990. Giuliani said he had that test 2{ weeks ago.

However, other conditions, such as noncancerous prostate enlargement, also can make PSA levels shoot up, so doctors must perform biopsies to make sure cancer is truly the cause. For every biopsy that detects prostate cancer, two or three others are false alarms.

Treatment options include radiation and chemotherapy. ''Some forms of treatment would require taking some time off,'' Giuliani acknowledged, but said he didn't expect it to be a significant amount of time.

The mayor smiled frequently during the news conference and joked with reporters. Asked whether he would be nicer, he replied, ''No way.''

Slowpoke Rodrigo...he pack a gon...

Vote for the Neal Knox 13

I'll see you at the TFL End Of Summer Meet!

This is BAD news.

Trust me, we do NOT want Hillary in office. She'll run for president within a decade if she makes the Senate this year.

Jim

Betcha we'll start seeing media reports exagerating how dibilitating PC is.....a lot of tongue clucking about poor unfortunate Rudy from the Dems and how, unfortunately he will be unfit to serve.

Jim March -- I agree, but I think the time-frame is off ;)

Four years from now she will, if elected:

Run against incumbent Bush.
or
Run as a replacement for the late Mr. Gore, who, just before the next election, had an "Arkansas Accident".

The New World Order has a Third Reich odor.

Coinneach: Could you elaborate on the fascist part of Rudy? This is not meant to get anyone upset, I'm just curious to know what's up with him. The only thing I'm aware of is the drop in crime in NY since he took office, so it would be interesting to hear about the other stuff.

Thanks in advance.

Coinneach has unfortunately been influenced by the media that has led a constant barrage of criticism against Rudy. Although he is liberal and no friend of RKBA he has cleaned up NYC and that is no mean feat.

The media and minority leaders are trying to paint him as a tyrant to get Hillary elected. All this nonsense about police brutality and "murders" of black men is designed to sway public opinion against the only viable Republican candidate for the senate in NY.

I would expect that members of this forum would see through the media propagnda and support Rudy, as he is the only person who can keep the witch out of the senate. If she wins her influence will reach throughout the entire country and all of us will feel the heat.

That senate race is a case of the lesser of two evils, Gulliani must win. We do not need another Klinton administration.

Should he bail?

1. Health risk - will he croak during his term
2. But he gets sympathy vote from old fart guys like me.
3. Has bad karma a bit from his big mouth over
whacko police shootings.
4. Got good karma for killing up NYC.
5. But upstate hates NYC
6. Other upstate GOP candidate looses NYC
as he or she in not Rudy

Tough call.

Correction on #3. The shootings happen all the time in NYC. The media is trying to mark Rudy as some type of Racist because of the police actions. The dirtbags who were shot have been portrayed as martyrs to the Minority community. NYC cops are no better or worse than any other cops, but they put up with a lot more doo doo than most have to.

Abou Louima is no saint, lied so many times in his testimony that even the press couldn't hide it. Too bad he ran across a rogue cop.

Amadou Diallo was here illegally, a neighbor saw him just prior to his being shot and stated he was acting suspiciously. That is why the four cops approached him.

The security guard did have a record and tried to rough up the cop who shot him.

They are being made into martyrs purely for political reasons, TO GET HILLARY ELECTED!

I would vote for Sadam Hussein for senator to keep Hillary out of office.

When he first ran for office Rudy was loved by everyone, and he was reelected! If he was such a facist that would not have happened. The "Clan with a Tan", the labor unions and the teachers unions want Hillary and they will smear anyone who gets in their way. Let's not forget that corporal Q Ball himself is calling the shots in Hillary's campaign (James Carville).

Rudy has also PO'ed the street vendors, taxi drivers and local John Gotti wannabees throughout the city. But I like him, he gets things done and has cleaned up the streets, even though I do not believe in many of his views.

If he drops out, Hillary will be senator :(
