McALLEN, Texas (AP) - Angered by the treatment of illegal Mexican immigrants in the United States, an activist in Mexico says he will offer $10,000 to anyone who kills a Border Patrol agent.
Carlos Ibarra Perez, president of the Citizens Defense Committee, said he would offer the bounty today in Reynosa, Mexico.
The action by Ibarra Perez, whose group claims to have 5,000 members, follows the killing of an undocumented immigrant by a border patrol agent two weeks ago in Brownsville and reported threats by vigilantes.
Ibarra Perez also expressed anger at the treatment of illegal immigrants near Douglas, Ariz., where armed ranchers have patrolled the border themselves, complaining of trespassing and vandalism by immigrants.
"If there are American citizens saying that they are going to kill immigrants, then why can't we (kill agents)?" Ibarra Perez told The Monitor of McAllen.
The Border Patrol had not heard about Ibarra Perez's intention to offer the bounty, supervisory agent Ramiro De Anda said.
De Anda said narcotics traffickers had made similar threats in the past in the El Paso area, but he had never heard of a community group making a similar offer.
"It's ludicrous," he said.
Mexican officials said they also were not aware of the proposal. Deputy Consul Jose Ramon Lopez de Leon in McAllen said the consulate was monitoring the situation.
"If something comes of it, then we will take action," he said.
