Ariz. Teacher Wounded at School
By ARTHUR H. ROTSTEIN, Associated Press Writer
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- A teacher who had been receiving threatening notes for several weeks was shot and wounded this morning in her classroom at a Tucson-area middle school.
School and sheriff's officials said the injury was not considered life-threatening, but did not elaborate. Television station KVOA reported the teacher, Kathy Morris, had been shot in the shoulder.
Morris, a sixth-grade teacher at La Cima Middle School, was listed in guarded condition at University Medical Center.
Sheriff's spokeswoman Deputy Deanna Coultas said the teacher had been preparing for a staff meeting when she excused herself and returned to her classroom. Morris reported the shooting herself.
Coultas said she had been receiving threatening notes but had no details.
The Sheriff's Department was looking for a man thought to be around 19 years old with a shaved head, Coultas said. They were also investigating the possibility that the teacher knew the gunman, she said.
School counselor Julie Cota said students had a late start today so none were present when the shooting happened.
La Cima has about 700 students in grades six through eight. Classes were canceled and that faculty and staff were being transferred to the headquarters of the Amphitheater School District.
