Anyway to mount a red dot on a Remington Model 514?

I want to put a Red Dot on my great great grandfather's .22 caliber Remington Model 514, would there be any way to do this? Thanks for any info in advance.

Unless it is one of the "x" models (that came with dovetail grooves from the factory), you'll have to get it drilled and tapped.

You might also look for a dovetail adapter that would replace the rear sight. This would allow you to prove the concept with no permanent modifications to Grandpa's gun.

I know they exist for pistols and suspect that they do for rifles as well. Of course, they may only work for smaller RMR type sights. I don't think you'd be able to hang an Eotech off of one.

I don't mean to change direction if you are really set on a red dot, but I put some peep sights (Tech Sights, brand name) on my marlin 60 (they also make some for remington) One of the absolute best products I've ever bought! The rear has interchangable appereture sizes, with windage and elevation adjustments and it just clamped right on to the dovetail!

BTW I am in no way affiliated with Tech Sights or paid to endorse them, I'm just very very happy with the product I purchased.

The problem is that the bolt slot is on top of the receiver. You'd need a forward top mounting system or a side-mounted one that can take a 1" tube red-dot.

I'd look into mounting on top, ahead of the action. Maybe you can find a mount that cantilevers back from the barrel mount, but remember that you have to access the action to load.

My side-mounted scope worked fine, but it used a 3/4" diameter scope. The stock had to be cut to accept the mount.

Whoa...those Remington 514's with scopes look pretty darn cool. I bet they'd shoot well too. I'll look into putting a rail and a scope on mine as well as a swivel and a bipod. I want to got ping to the max :D. Anyway thanks for your help guys.

Earlier, I was speaking from what happened to my 514 about 55 years ago. A Weaver center-fire type side mount with 3/4" scope top was used at the time, as I remember. The gunsmith was a "butcher". Haven't seen that rifle since 1961 and that experience when I was about 14, caused me to learn gunsmithing, so I could do better work than that guy.

I've since mounted scopes on other non-grooved receivers in the 510-513 series rifles, using Weaver Top Mount Bases, but haven't mounted any on 514s.

Had a 513 as a kid. Tube fed. No plastic parts in that one. Pretty good shooter as I recall too. But I don't recall it being factory drilled for scope use. As far as having one drilled by a local smith. I wouldn't think it would be all that expensive. $30-40 dollars maybe. Red dot. Mighty hard on those small game targets. (never miss)
