Anything wrong with the Model 19?

I have a sweet blue model 19 that looks to me to have a 2.5 inch barrel (although it has "-3" stamped inside the cylinder.)

Great action. Anything to look out for?

Just got a free one from my grandfather. I'm going to use it for IDPA. just got a pair of hogue grips and am going to get a blade tech holster with speed loaders and holders. Alot of people have told me they have used it in IDPA shooting .38 but also having the ability to shoot 357 for defensive purposes. Had to choose from the 19 that my grandfather had and the 66 which is basically a stainless steel version. I knew i was going to beat it up shooting IDPA with it so i picked the blue version which had been used a little already. Can't wait to try it out.

You've got one of Smith and Wesson's gems. One of my all-time favorites. Cherish it and enjoy!!!

The only problem is that the 2.5" barrels do not have full length case retraction. You will need to learn the extractor slap and shake. The -3 indicates which change of M19 that you have, it does not have anything to do with barrel length. You do have a nice revolver. Is it a round butt as it is 2.5"? K frames are being cut off in 357 Magnum from S&W. You got a good one, I would BEG for the M66 also!

The only thing wrong with a 2.5 inch M19-3 is it’s in your safe, and not in mine. They are superb revolvers. Enjoy yours. I would suggest you do almost all of your shooting with standard pressure .38 Specials; this will ensure the longevity of your M19 snubbie.

The M-19 is a medium frame (K-frame) revolver. It is a well built handgun and will give you years of service. But because it is built on a medium frame, some advice. A steady diet of full house .357`s will loosen it up in time. You should shoot standard .38`s through it and some magnum ammo once in awhile. Keep your heavy stuff for serious work. Enjoy your new gun.
