Anything similar to Remington 51 made today?

I handled a 51 and liked it. Two problems...no reliable way to get parts...and symbolic sights. Same problem with Colt Hammerless 1908, that and .380 is reputed to be unreliable.

I am considering a Colt Mustang Pocketlite but wish to explore the thin blowback .380 with longish barrels. Any advice?

Oleg, you've uncovered one of my favorite overlooked handguns. I don't know why someone isn't making the Rem 51 in stainless steel with slightly larger sights. It's simply a marvelous .380, and one of the flattest guns around. Great for CC.

Gun Parts Co. used to have most parts available, although the grips always seem difficult to find.

The Remington 51 would be too expensive to make today with that odd Pedersen hesitation blowback action. Most of the broken grips were caused by attempts to pry them off rather than taking them off properly.

I will second the motion for a thin pocket pistol. In concealed carry, bulk is the big enemy, not barrel length.

I found one for $565 in decent if not great condition. I noticed the blowback action is stange but I am not sure how it works (details, anyone?). I emailed Gunparts corp with question about spare mags.

Any caveats, comments, suggestion on where to buy one? How are accuracy, recoil?

:( Sights do suck...can anything be done about that?

Jim: Did not the Benelli B76 use a similiar delaying mechanism? Admittedly the B76 was a commercial failure, but that was probably due to it being a thick, heavy, single stack, DA 9x19mm that was reliable only with FMJ. (Benelli didn't exactly have name recognition in the US at the time either.)

Now the pistol that I'd like to see would be a modern Remington 53. The Model 51 design was scaled up to .45 ACP for testing by the USN. Before anyone screams 'heresy', remember that John Moses Browning once predicted that John Pedersen would be an even greater designer than he (J.M.B) was.

Oleg: got beaten out of a 55 browning 380 this morning. There are 10/71's in 380 that with a good fixed rear ala Novak, and a good tall front blade might work for you even with a 4" bbl.

I can't believe I said that without having 2 or 3 already stashed.

Why would the 51 be expensive or hard to build with all the CNC machines, EDM machining and all that? I would be almost, almost willing to trade my second generation SAA for one. Stainless and good sights, oh my.
