anyone want to discuss / design some lever action speedloaders ???

I've been checking out what some others are using on the cowboy loading tables...

I found this design explained on line...

the local hot shooter uses a plastic tube, that has a removeable push rod, works like a syringe, with the plunger resembling a bullet seating rod on a muzzle loader, which he carries in the barrel, until he loads the rifle...

I have 2 brass tubes of the correct size at my retired machinist buddies house right now... I'm leaning towards the syringe style, but with a non removable plunger, so that the tube doesn't have to be slotted as in the linked design... I've dug up a better cartridge retainer for the loader, that just puts one or 2 small slots at the pointy ( business end ) & uses a thick O-ring that goes around the tube, & reduces the I.D. of the tube, but allows the O-ring to stretch & the cartridges to push past them...

my goal is to have something that looks period, with the brass outer tube, a walnut stained wood dowel for a plunger, & a brass or ceramic drawer pull as the plunger end knob...

thoughts on building a speed loader ??? follow my design process ??? have any better ideas ???
 
It's like the type of speed loader used for shotguns.
They work pretty good, too, as long as they're held tightly against the mag loading port.
If not, the rounds go all over the place.
 
I have shootin' pards that use them, but I don't. To each his own. I have gotten pretty fast at loadin' 'em by hand, and I look at each time at the loading table doing so as practice for that time I have to load one rifle round on the clock. That's just me.
 
I may find loading a 45 easier ( if MRS MAGNUM shoots next year, I'll likey be buying a 45 ) but right now my 38 / 357 is actually tough to reload... it's a 20 something ( pre safety ) unfired engraved rifle I bought just for this purpose... but the 38 cartridges & the gate area are smaller than my fingers, & I find I end up 1/2 loading each one, & when I get to the last one, I need to push it in with my little finger... kinda awkwards...

if the MRS is shooting the 38 next year... I'm sure I'll hear about how she's destroying her nails...

I understand the practicing for adding a cartridge under the timer, but for regular use stuffing 10, it seems like an accessory I want... not to mention... the time savings... often I'm spotting, fetching brass or some such, & end up with only a minimum time left to load before I shoot... if the rifle loads quicker, it might give me the extra time needed to insure I have the correct shooting sequence, so I can avoid those costly proceadurals...
 
Reminds me of the Spencer reloading tube. Now all you need is a Blakeslee Cartridge Box to carry six to seven of them in.

Get a short piece of deer antler on a leather string, a bit of the tip is best. Start the round into the loading gate then use the piece of antler to push it the rest of the way in. This will save MRS a nail or two and likely save you some undeserved grief.
