anyone using H4198 for 223 Remington?

I've got a few flavors of Hornady 55 grain bullets on hand, and a decent supply of 62 grain Noslers. I am nearly out of my usual powder and it's looking like I won't be able to get any more anytime soon.

I need to load enough rounds to get through the next 7 weeks of weekly high-power league.

I have exactly one pound of H4198 that I got a while ago for 7.62x39 rounds but I got rid of that rifle. I see Hodgdon has some data for bullets up to 63 grains but it looks like H4198 is intended more for lighter, 35 to 50 grain bullets.

Anybody get any decent results with H4198 and 55 or 62 grain projectiles?

I've made many rounds of .223 using 19.6gr of H4198 under a Midway Dogtown 55gr SP, sparked with a CCI-400 non-magnum primer. (it's been suggested these are Nosler over-run JSP slugs)

I came to this load because I had picked up a bottle of H4198 and the load gave me terrific accuracy out of my Super 14" Contender.

Two things that I need to mention specifically:
--I've never even once attempted to run this load in an AR or any gas-op semi-auto, I've only sent them through my bolt gun and my Contender. Thus... I have no idea how well this load will "run" a black rifle

--H4198 is an extruded powder as simply isn't as friendly in a conventional powder measure such as my Lyman 55, but the fact that it's a lot more WORK to dispense the charges has not affected the fine accuracy I see from the load.

Knowing twist rate of your barrel would be helpful? I use 4198 and find it to be a reasonable powder for my application of it in the 55 gr. It is a stick powder as previously mentioned. But because of its grain size being so small. My pacific Rifle powder measure'r doesn't seem to mind metering it. I scale my charges most of the time. As I only reload what I shoot. But as you probably require many rounds being made for your up coming event. But than again not knowing what you use for a powder measure'r ? That would require a call on your part. Whether your equipment could or perhaps may have trouble metering it. To cut to the chase. In my opinion H-4198 or IMR 4198 either are good choices. But maybe there other members who disagree. We'll see.
Good luck shooting at your up coming event Sir.

Sure Shot: The barrel has a 1 in 8 twist. It should be good for bullets up to at least 75 grains. I need about 25 rounds per "match" with 1 or 2 matches per week for league shooting.

Oh so that's the twist 1 in 8. Well that's pretty quick. Ain't 1 in 7 but close. I is just kidding yaw. lol
League shooting you say. Hmm are you.~~ Or do you belong to that shooting facility I believe it's in St Francis? Or the one just outside of Hibbing? tucked back in the woods near those ore dumps I think they were called by the locals. I been to see both as either a participant or observer a few years back. Well actually a shade more than a few years its been actually.
As far as streching a pound of powder. I'm pretty sure your going to need more than pound of powder to meet your needs for all those matches Sir. lol Any way 1-8 is a happy medium twist. I happen to have both sides 1-7 & 1-9. Ah!! gee's>#@#$#$@< someone is skyping me. Good luck and enjoy that MN fresh-air DarthNul

H4198

I just purchased 8lbs of H4198 and I read that it works great for my .308 has anyone tried this behind a Nosler 168 grain bullet? Also, I read that it works great with my .223. Let me know Thanks!

The most accurate load I use for both of my bolt rifles (1/12 & 1/9 twist) is 20-21gr. of IMR4198 and 52gr bullets. This combination has proven to be very good from a number of rifles, not only mine. I have come to the conclusion that if this doesn't shoot accurately in your rifle, nothing will. Remember, I am talking about bolt rifles. Good luck and best wishes.

IMR4198 was popular with the benchresters shooting .222 Rem chambered tack drivers' 50 to 55 grain bullets back in the '50's.

IMR H4198

Hello guys and thanks for the replys. Let me ask you this. I purchase an 8# jug of IMR H4198 powder for my .17 Hornet NOT my .308 sorry I must have gotten confused. Anyway I purchased some Nosler 168 grain bullets for target practice and was wondering

A. Is this the correct bullet for targets
B. If so, what powder to purchase
C. What primer works best.

I have the new savage Model 10 LF

3298 do you have a reloading book? If so you can check that by using it. There is some people that might give you info that is not any good!

Just a note that if you research using IMR or H4198 you will find it's the most problematic powder for reloading AR's. It's barely on the edge to have enough gas to cycle the actions. Some report that it takes maximum charges to make their AR's extract and pick up the next round from the magazine. Maybe you'll have no issues but lot's do with 4198 powders in AR's.
