anyone use NVG devices?

I have used 7Bravos which has 2 eye lenses but is only a monocle viewer and AN/PVS 14's which is a monocle. I think the 7Bravos are 1st gen and the picture is really grainy , if you move to fast it blurs pretty bad also. The 14's are the next generation and the increase in quality is amazing, the picture is much clearer and needs less light to be effective.

Actually I think the PVS-7B's are 2nd generation and PVS-14's are 3rd generation. A 1st generation NVG might me a PVS-5, I think.

Can't keep the nomenclature straight, so I won't try.
The first generation stuff didn't impress me much. It would toast your natural night vision if you used them and they had major limits. I also got tired of my joes falling into holes or off ledges with them on (you have no depth perception).
The first gen stuff is good if you're stationary watching an area for movement.
I didn't like it for much else.
It looks like a crappy old green screen the computers used to have only much worse.

PVS 5's are 2nd generation and the 7's are third. We have 7a's and 7d's at work along with handheld thermal units. The 7a's are first gen first series while the 7'd are greatly improved they are still using 3rd gen tubes. I remove my glasses and focus the 7'd to the extent that my glasses are no longer needed.

While the 7's are nice you do not have any depth perception and a real narow field of view. It takes some training to be able to walk/run with them let alone driving a blacked out vehicle :D :D

If I was to purchase any it would be somthing from ITT or Litton as these are the suppliers to the U.S. Military. From what I've read the russian NVG's are junk.

I have a set of Gen. II's that I got from an air force guy in exchange for a complete gortex outfit (minus the boots). I didn't ask him where he got em at but they work great. I think at the time, they were going for around $2000.

Other then being a novelty, the goggles now sit in my safe collecting dust.
