Anyone use aa 9 for the 44 mag

I load a lot of 44 Mag lead and use Unique 10.2gr (starting load) 240 lead at 950 fps .
I have some AA 9 I would like to use up but the starting load for AA 9 is 18.2 a little to fast(1200 fps) for me . Dose anyone down load AA9 ?
 
#9 does not require a Mag Primer and it downloads better that W296. Been using it for over 20 years and three manufacturers.

Edit to add: When you get below #7 max. load levels it tends to get a bit less consistent so expect you E.S. to get larger.
 
Just seen in an old manual starting at 17.5 my newer manual 18.2 ?
I really have little faith in my newer AA Manual never did .
It lists AA 9 starting load at 21.3 and Max at 18.2 ??
 
I've loaded thousands of rounds of .44 for the Desert Eagle. AA#9 is by far the cleanest, and unlike many others, I don't have to go past the "maximum" column in the loading chart to make the gun cycle.

I tried more than a dozen powders before settling on that one.
 
I have. The Accurate Arms pistol powders are favorites of mine since they flow like water in my powder measure, making consistent velocities and low extreme spreads, etc. more likely than with some other powders. They are also clean burning and low flash within my humble experience. I have used very little AA-2, but one characteristic I've noticed in using AA-5, AA-7 and AA-9 is velocities becoming less consistent and extreme spreads increasing as loads are decreased from maximum. This is just an observation and has not been an issue for me.
 
TRX I have used AA-9 before and yes it is clean . My question was/is not if it is any good I know it is the question is CAN IT BE DOWN LOADED .
I do not need 1200 fps loads to shoot steel targets .

In the 1980,s I shot a barrel out on a DE with AA 9 so I did use it before .
 
I've used AA 9, AA 7, and AA 5 in my 44 mag.

A starting load of #5 under a Nosler 240 gr. jacketed soft point gives me about 950 fps out of my 5" m29 with nice accuracy.
 
Listed velocity in the load books is what they got with their barrel and components. Granted it still might be AA-9 that the data is for, but since you have no control over the barrel or test fixture used, your velocity may be slower or even faster than what they list.

I use a LOT of AA-9 but I do not worry about the velocity being anything other than what it is for a given combination. Sometimes it's faster, sometimes it's slower, you simply have to try with your components and see where your at.

As mentioned it will download to a degree, but you might as well simply drop over to AA-7 instead and you would probably be better off. Not to say #9 won't deliver what your looking for, simply that it might not be as consistent as mentioned above.

Just my .02 having shot it for at least the 20yrs listed above.

I have some AA 9 I need to load and use only to be used up (I will not buy more) . I load all my 44 Mag with Unique and it works well for shooting steel . I have 7/8 lb. of AA 9 and it has been setting around for a year or two . Also I only shoot 44 Mag and 44 Special and not much else .
 
#9 in 44 mag? You bet.

I have loaded #9 to max loads in Hornady JHP 240 gr and 300 gr for the Desert Eagle.

It is now my go-to load for 44 mag. It is not abrupt like H110/W296? longer, less peaky pressure curve (because it is not abrupt?)

Good velocity, outstanding accuracy.

I've about 12# of MIL SURP H110/W296 which I will use for 30 Carbine.

For the 44 mag, I'll be using #9 or 2400, both of which have much milder recoil.

I shotabuncha experimental #9 loads with the aforementioned Hornady 240 and 300 gr. in the Desert Eagle over the chrono. I had an audience behind watching me.

A while back, at Fish Canyon in Duarte, CA.
 
Just because a thread is old doesn't mean the information therein is useless.

Replying to the thread may be futile, but the information is still good.
 
It can be, but when you post in what we call a zombie thread (old one brought back to life), you generally get fewer responses than you get starting a new one on the same topic and that means newer information that may have developed on the topic is less likely to be posted.
