Do you have to be certified/licensed to charge a fee for firearms instruction? Out of the range (classroom) instruction and actually shooting a firearm?

I'd say so

Here we definately do (in Oz)

Slightly off topic, but I also fly Cessna's, when I take folks for a joyflight, they aren't even allowed to contribute to fuel/rental of the aircraft  How do I get around it? I take them for free, but they have to pay for a photo of them standing in front of the aircraft.... That I charge for.... strangely enough, the cost of the pic is about what the fuel/rental would have cost.... funny that, and some folks dont even come back for the pic?? :D

At least I didn't charge them for the flight, hehehehe, nudge, nudge... wink, wink

You can take whatever meaning you want from that info .....

In your situation tho, you have to remember.... If someone you are 'instructing' for a fee, accidently shoots themself, someone else.... or you  Someone will be wanting to sue someone..... more than likely you

So, If I were you, I would look long and hard at the actual laws in your state, before risking what you are thinking of..... Different if you just want a little cash to cover ammo..... (sell them a pic of them with a gun) but if you do it like a business.... insurance is your friend :D & I dont think anyone would insure you in your venture unless you held the appropriate 'official' qualifications

Beware

I've been certified to train individuals on the MIL side, but alas I haven't paid the money to get the paper that says I should train on the CIV side. I wouldn't dream of doing classes without it. Now if some friends that I know and trust want to learn some pointers, I'll be more than happy to show them if they're open to being taught... but it's for free and NSA.

You bet

I am a licensed CCW Instructor in Utah and have been teaching since Utah changed its law and became easier to get a CCW permit in Utah. To be a licensed instructor I became a NRA Certified Instructor. And yes I teach both Classroom as well as on the Range.

Oh by the way I am also a certified Hunter Education Instructor in Utah and have been now for 15 plus years and am in the process of becoming a Hunter Education Instuctor here in Idaho.

There is no federal or state (in Florida) law that requires you to have a license to charge for generic firearms instruction. There are some types of instruction, such as LEO and security guard that do require a state instructor certificiation.

On the other hand, the state only accepts training from certain types of instructors, such as NRA instructor, as meeting the requirement for getting a CCW.

In Wyoming no license is needed however, to teach CCW classes Wyoming requires that one have attended ANY NRA instructor course.

That includes Hunting Safty intructors, Completing a Hunter Safety Class qualifies you for you CCW in Wyoming. (Also manditory to hunt if you were born after 1966).

Some people charge, some (including me) dont charge. I find it odd, some instructors charge $75 or more, yet the Hunter Safety Class is only $5.

Personaly I think getting a permit shouldn't cost anything. I dont think one should have to pay to be able to protect themselves and their families. But thats just my opinion.

I also put on High Power & Bulleyes Clinics, I dont charge for them either. But I have selfish reasons for that. I want to get HP & Bullseye started in this part of the state so I dont have to travel as far for matches.

Having said all that, CC permits are just the starting point. The individual has the responsibility to keep training, keep practicing, doing everything possible to improve, regardless of you experience. There is no stopping point. You dont see Olympic Medal winners stop practicing.

I'm NRA Pistol Certified and I would charge a nominal fee to cover paperwork (course materials, etc.). I dont do this to make a profit.

No, you don't. You might have some tax issues, but AFAIK you can advertise that you will teach people to shoot, have classes, collect money, and go to the range without any special licenses or certifications. The licenses and certifications are helpful when it comes to proving your background and when getting insurance, but that is it. Whether anybody of any note would honor your training (such as for CCW application) is a different story.

Hunter Education is all that is requuired to be able to get a CCW here in Idaho as well. But having been a Hunter Ed Instructor for 15 years There is not really anything besides Never Point a Firearm at anything you are not willing to shoot. That applies in CCW!

In Hunter Education we teach people how not to shoot other people, In a CCW class we teach them when, where, and how to do so.

Yes I do charge for my classes. I charge $40.00 per person and the class will usually last about 4 1/2 hours. I paid to become a NRA Instructor it was not Cheap. I am also required by the State of Utah to maintain my license to be able to teach.

I know some instructors will only deal with large classes. I have taught many classes of one person. I have also taught large classes. I want to make sure the student gets the information that they will need to protect themselves and keep there legal problems to a minimun.

4-H

I teach 4-H BB-gun, air rifle, smallbore(.22lr target) and trap. I have been 4-H certified since 2004. The experience has been very good. Our program is as cheep as it gets. Kids don't have to supply anything if they can't. As long as saftey and 4-H rules are heeded everyone involved is insured. I would recomend it to anyone who is intrested. Check out 4-H shooting sports near you!
