Anyone shot the new Taurus PT145?

Looks like a perfectly sized CCW gun. .45 ACP, 10 rounds, only 6" length, 4.87 height, and only 1.125 wide, even with 10 rounds. DAO only, but I prefer that anyway.

It's in the current issue of Handgunner magazine. They really liked it, except for Taurus only supplying 1 mag with their guns. It's smaller and lighter than a Glock 30, and still holds 10.

Thoughts?

Have one, haven't shot it yet. This makes me a little leary about it:

Frame crack on the PT-145

I really like the size, the weight, the position of the safety and mag release, the fact that it has restrike capability. The trigger is long and can be quite gritty, but the gritty feeling went away after about 500 dry fires.

If I didn't have the pistol already, I'd wait several months until I hear taurus has addressed the problem.

The PT-145 has serious problems that revolve around the material properties of the polymer they are using. My PT145 and indeed ALL others that I know of, develop frame cracks after just a small number of rounds. I personally know of three, including mine, that have suffered this. My FFL is, at this time, sending them back to Taurus for evaluation and repair. :(

I bought a brand new one and shot it probably 50 rnds. I did shoot pretty well, but after hearing about all the frame problems I just traded it in for a Springfield champion.

That's one problem I don't need. I'm very happy with the Springfield Champion.

Denfoote and others who have seen the troubled pt-145's - do you think the addition of a stronger recoil spring might act to preserve the frame integrity? I was shocked when I picked up this gun how easy it was to work the slide.

No, I don't think so. I think it is a materials problem. Glock frames don't crack!!! Maybe they just have to engineer some reinforcement in that area. I wait to see what Taurus does.

My friend has one, he likes it. There's only been a few problems with his.

1. Sights aren't that well regulated. Shoots several inches low.
2. He had to change his grip quite a bit as he kept accidently hitting the magazine release during firing.

I've alerted him to the fact that there's a frame crack problem and he's going to start checking that NOW!!!

Other than that, it's very manageable for a small .45. I've shot it several times and like it except for it's trigger. But of course, after a Kimber, no trigger feels good anymore! :D

So the WORST possible case for Danny's buddy is,

1. He has to use the gun is a stressful situation.
2. He dumps the mag because he reverted to his "old" grip under stress.
3. He manages to get the mag back and fire, and the slide cracks and won't go back into battery for the 2ns shot.

That's too worst-case for me.

Dave,

You have it a little wrong. The slide does NOT crack. It is the back of the frame that is cracking. I'm sure you can still fire rounds even if the frame cracks.

I've never had the problem of accidentally releasing the mag while firing the gun. I can see how it might be possible. It all depends on your grip. If you look at other guns, that could happen as well.
