Anyone shortened 10/22 barrel in re-installed sight?

I'd like to cut one of my 10/22 barrels down to just over 16" (the legal minimum, I believe). I'd probably use a scope with it most of the time, but I would still like to have iron sights available. Does anyone know if its possible to remove the front sight "band" from a 10/22 and re-install it farther down the barrel? I'm a complete rookie at such things, but I'm wondering if I applied some heat if it might melt the solder and allow me to move it. Anyone tried this? Thanks.

I may be wrong but it seems to me that the band and barrel are one piece. I guess the end could be cut and drilled out to a sleave and silver soldered on. But what a project, probably need to get a sight base and put that on. :)

I already have an extra 10/22 barrel, and I want the 16" to use on an old folding-stocked 10/22 (to make a very compact package to take camping, etc.). I don't want to put much money into it, so if this is a big deal, I'll either leave it 18" or due without iron sights (I use a compact scope on this rifle most of the time anyway). I just wondered if there were a relatively easy way to do this.
