Unmarked police car with weapons stolen in Glendale

Associated Press
May. 4, 2000 10:01

GLENDALE - Authorities are looking for an unmarked police car that was stolen sometime Wednesday night from in front of the home of a Glendale police officer.

Glendale police spokesman Matt Brown says police are especially concerned because there was a n M-P-Five submachine gun in the trunk, along with two 30-round magazines.

Also in the trunk was a Glock 40-caliber handgun, with at least two 14-round clips.

Two bulletproof vests also were in the trunk, along with black clothing with ''police'' written in white across it.

The missing car is a white 1994 Crown Victoria with Arizona license 5-1-7-B-F-J.

It was taken from out in front of a home in north Glendale.

The officer it was assigned to is a SWAT team member.

As for the guns, Brown says departmental policy is that weapons not be left in police vehicles at night when they are parked.

It is so nice to know that the next batch of home invaders in police uniforms are likely the (other) bad guys. All the more argument for 30-06 welcome.

Well, what's the big deal?
Everyone knows the MP5 is no threat to anyone as long as your finger is off the trigger.

NEWS RELEASE: Glendale AZ
04 May 2000
Associated Press

A teenager at the Glendale Middle School in the sleepy retirement community of Glendale, Arizona, walked into the school's gymnasium dressed in black police SWAT fatigues carrying a 9mm submachine gun, and began firing wildly at the scoreboard. Glendale Police Chief Kendrief described the scene as, "a battlefield".

The school's principal Andrea Michaels believed the student to be a basketball player from a rival neighboring high school which lost to Glendale 62-61 the night before the shooting. Ms. Michaels said she recognized the student because he wore Nike Air Jordan basketball shoes, and she could see a letterman's jacket sticking out from the black police uniform the gunman wore. Ms. Michaels also had reports that the SWAT adorned student yelled obsentities while he reloaded the "wicked looking submachine gun". Students exiting the nearby locker room during the shooting saw the suspect running out to the school's parking lot where he drove off in a white four door sedan.

No students or teachers were injured during the shooting, but the scoreboard was a total loss. Police are investigating a recent auto theft of a Glendale officer's unmarked squad car where a Heckler & Koch MP5 submachine gun was said to have been left in the vehicle's trunk along with other police tactical gear. Police have not recovered the vehicle or the suspect at this time.

President Clinton addressed the Nation this afternoon promising to sign an executive order to ban all large capacity ammunition clips, which he said, "Will prevent further tragic scoreboard deaths."

Well, if you are home and only one SWAT guy comes bursting through your door, you'll know he's a fake and then you'll light him up. :p

i've always wondered about policies about this. i've seen it done consistently by a deputy (shotgun) and a state police officer (leo only ar-15).

I might confuse the missing squad car with those that aren't missing. Perhaps they could give me the license numbers of the cars they still have accounted for so that I will not report one of them by mistake?

I live north of Dallas and in our county wide shopper there was an ad for information on the theft of an H&K MP5. They were offering a $10,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of the thief. They stole itout of a u-rent-um storage center. If you had a MP5 would it be kept in some storage shed?

In the department I used to work for, a deputy had an AR-15, and a M-870 taken from his car. He was interviewing a person inside the house, and had left the windows down on his car. The AR and shotgun were never recovered, and the deputy got in a lot of trouble! He didn't get fired though, and instead lost his priveledge to drive the car home at nights.

I'm with RHC, where's the problem? I mean, they do have trigger locks right? Right? Hello! I said right? *knock-knock* Anybody there? Can I hear a "Yeah, they have locks on the trigge, whattda ya think we are, drug dealers that leave a gun in between the mattress?"
(tongue firmly in cheek)

This story is not suprising. For those of you who are not Arizonans you should know this is at least the fourth time this has happened in the Phoenix Metro area!!! Exact same scenario. 1 or 2 stolen MP-5's handguns, body armor, etc.

The first one I recall was about 5 years ago when a (I believe) Tempe P.D. or Mesa P.D. unmarked SWAT car--a Chevy Caprice had the trunk pried and two MP-5s taken. All while the Swat officers sat eating their lunch at a nearby Mall--the car was parked just outside. I don't ever recall hearing that those were EVER recovered.

Not a year later this time Phoenix P.D. an unmarked car was stolen and I believe the suspects and gear were recovered within a month.

Later, I remember another incident Phoenix P.D. again and I think what's know as a "Vanilla Van" was stolen. Basically, this is a regular looking full sized van set up for surveillance or SWAT operations and this time it was laden with goodies. MP-5's, M16's (CAR configuration), shotguns, flash bangs, body armor you name it. I don't remember if that one was recovered.

Now its Glendale. Probably the Mexican Mafia again.

Kind of interesting. I know if I were a hard core felon, hell bent on making tons of dough of the drug trade or some such I would be hunting these cars and swat officers down just for the opporunity to steal these goodies. I think this is EXACTLY what has been happening.

Either that or these "theft" might be of an inside nature. I also recall when some Phoenix P.D. officers were reprimanded, yes slapped on the wrist for purchasing Steyr Augs at a discount using their status just after these were no longer availble to the general public. Well, these officers were buying one or more and reselling them to the average joe for $4,000.00+. There's some integrity.

I have many friends in law enforcement down here and many say there are some strange things going on at our local PDs. Won't it be great when we're all disarmed? :)

Good grief! I think anyone should know better than to leave guns in the car when they are not in it! I would *never* leave my guns out in the car overnight. This was a really brainless thing to do!

5 or 6 years ago here in Atlanta, somebody swiped a Ford Crown Victoria with gov't plates. Loaded with electronics.

Turns out it belonged to the Secret Service!!! They were in town with some guy named Clinton or some such.

Don't think they ever recovered that car.

Imagine being a car theif & hearing on the radio that you just swiped a secret service car. I think I'd be finding a deep lake to drive it into, real quick!
