Anyone know what happened to all of those Garands?

This morning I had a TFL inspired dream. I remembered someone posting something about being in the last company of Navy Recruits to tote around an M-1 in Boot Camp.

Personally, I think that its a shame that the military no longer sees the importance of recruits carrying a weapon (even a disabled weapon).

That aside, I must of had this rolling around my subconcious because this morning I had a dream that I pulled up to RTC (been closed for a few years) here in San Diego in a black pickup and some guys were loading trucks up with as many Garands as you wanted. When I woke up, the thought struck me that those Garands we lugged around for 6 weeks were probably in pretty good shape overall. They had plugged barrels and the bolt was spot welded shut as I recall, but the receivers should have been in good shape, or at least serviceable.

Anyone have any idea of what happens to surplus military disabled firearms? Just trying to satisfy my curiousity.

Try a search on the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP). This is the result of the funding drop of the DCM program a few years ago. They sell complete rifles in various grades all the way down to bare receivers. It is how the govt now disposes of M1's, best of all you can get one a year now.

Weren't Garands being destroyed as surplus and sold for scrap?? The very thought makes me shudder... :<

M14's were being destroyed at Aniston, GA. You go to Camp Perry and you can buy mangled receivers for 4 or 5 bucks. It's a damn crime. Talk about waste, fraud, and abuse Semper Fi...Ken

Man Oh Man, When I was in Navy Boot, we carried Springfield M 1903 and 1903-A3 rifles. We never got to shoot them or anything else while in boot camp??? Strange to me too. Anyway, they all looked good to go. They were sound rifles with good wood, bright bores and all intact. I just hope that Gunny didn't learn his drill in boot with a M14. He would still remember the serial number of the piece and the name he gave it!
He would also know that our wonderful Govt. has probably burned it in half with a torch.
Check out the CMP and get a piece of our military history before it's all gone!

EchoFiveMike was right about the M-14's being destroyed, but the location was a little off. The Anniston Army Depot is located just west of Anniston, Alabama. Tens of thousands of servicable small arms are destroyed here every year. You name it and they cut it up into little pieces! This was also the site from which hundreds of thousands of M1903-A3, Springfields, M1922-M2 Springfields, and M-1 Carbines were shipped to NRA members who purchased them for $19.50 in the 1960's.

If you want to buy an M-1 it's easier than you think . Just contact F. Castro , Havana Cuba . He came into some quite by accident at the Bay of Pigs .
