Anyone know about the detent on S&W 686 rear sights or replacing with Meprolight

So I replaced the plain black sights on my S&W 686 with a set from Meprolight.

Pretty easy breazy.

Only snag I hit was on the replacement of the rear sight adjusting screw head. I couldn't get the detent to fit into the detent hole on the screw head.

However, it screwed in fine without it.

I was wondering, what purpose does this detent and detent spring serve?

Can I just skip replacing them with no real harm?

My amateur instincts tell me they're just there to make audible clicks when adjusting the sights left and right.

As always, any help would be appreciated.

The detent is to both give the elevation screw it's "click" AND to make sure the sight retains it's setting.

No detent, and the sight screw may move, causing the sight to drift off target.
